The best hosts aren't the stars of the show.
They make everyone else shine.

That was the highlight from this week's Oscar Moment meeting at Hong Kong Achievers Toastmasters.

One guest commented:
"I have never seen a meeting that sticks to the theme so smoothly throughout the meeting. Oftentimes we forget the theme by the end, but not this time.”
That didn't happen by accident.

Our Meeting Chair Ramya planned the meeting well in advance, from a special themed agenda (can include agenda in the post as well) to simple slides that kept the spotlight on the speakers and role takers.

Jennifer, our Toastmaster ensured every speaker's objectives were clearly explained, while Derek kept the energy high with fun and engaging Table Topics, without over explaining every prompt.

It reminded me how relevant these roles are to the workplace.

Leading a meeting isn't about talking the most.
It's about preparation, structure, timing, and creating an environment where others can succeed.

That's why I value roles like Meeting Chair, Toastmaster, and Table Topics Master.
Many people join Toastmasters to become better speakers.
But these roles teach something just as important:
How to run a room.

*You are being evaluated more often than you think.*

At this week’s Villain Monologue themed meeting, our General Evaluator, Andrew Yeung, played the villain perfectly.

In every story, villians have a purpose — they reveal weaknesses and force heroes to grow. And Andrew did exactly that- make us see things we hadn’t noticed ourselves.

One observation stood out:
Showing up is not the same as being prepared.

In Toastmasters, a General Evaluator helps us reflect on how we perform our roles and how the meeting is run.

At work, we rarely have someone giving us that kind of feedback.
But we are still being evaluated.

Every meeting.�Every presentation.�Every project update.

People notice when we are prepared. And when we are not.

That’s one of the benefits of Toastmasters. It builds the habits of preparation, self-awareness, and professionalism before the stakes are high.

Because in the real world, there may not be a General Evaluator.
But there is always an audience.
