There are 37 children in a big family. The no. of sisters are thrice the no. of brothers. How many girls are there in the family? (Sloved by algebraic simultaneous equations, otherwise no mark will be given.)

Google Cloud just calculated the first 100 trillion digits of pi 08/06/2022

"Pi" is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of the circle. As you can treat a circle as a polygon with infinite no. of vertices, so theoretically, the calculation of this ratio "pi" can be upto infinity no. of digits as well. Nowadays, mathematicians are using supercomputers to find as many digits as possible this ratio "pi" which is normally just rounded off to 3.14 (2 decimal places) when we calculate the circumferences of most circles in our daily maths.

Google Cloud just calculated the first 100 trillion digits of pi Google Cloud just shattered the previous record of calculating the numbers of pi. And our knowledge of it extends out to 100 trillion digits.

Before you do a RAT (Rapid Antigen Test), have you ever thought of:
What is the probability of you being infected if tested positive?
Or what is the probability of you being healthy if tested negative?

Here I like to share with you a mathematic model based on the following assumptions: your test kits is 99% accurate, and we have about 2% of the population in HK being infected.

Let us look at the tree diagram in the picture.

If (given) a person is tested Positive, the probability that he is infected: -
P(I|P) = P(I and P)/P(P)
= (2% x 99%)/(2% x 99% + 98% x 1%)
= 66.89%

On the other hand, if (given) a person is tested Negative, the probability that he is healthy: -
P(H|N) = P(H and N)/P(N)
= (98% x 99%)/(98% x 99% + 2% x 1%)
= 99.98%

Conclusion: If your test result is Positive, your chance of getting infected is about 67%, so you should do a more thorough testing, e.g., Nucleic Acid Testing. On the other hand, if you test case are negative, nearly 100%, you are not infected!

So feel comfortable to do more RAP if you need. This is maths!

Why Do We Still Use Horsepower? What do engines have to do with horses? Why do we still use horsepower? Legend has it that engineer James Watt invented the term "horsepower".
