2025 has been a whirlwind of events for the world and we've been no less busy here at Zen Quest Adventures. We've climbed mountains, battled our way up canyons, and cruised down serene rivers on our paddleboards. Not to mention how many times we've measured wetted perimeter, gradient, and channel depth with our and students!

We've welcomed new staff, new equipment, and experimented with implementing cutting-edge technologies into our River & Field Studies programmes.

But at the end of it all, our underlying philosophy lies unperturbed - Deliver outstanding outdoor education programmes. This has been our simple motto since 2012 and though we must adapt to the changing world of education, our foundation will always be the same.

Ranging from just one day to three day trips, students will get hands on experience on and in the river, measuring a variety of parameters for later analysis in the classroom.

Our river studies programmes are generally suited to measurement and study pertaining to the Bradshaw model, but can be adapted on request to your specific curriculum.

🌡️ Why weather can be one of our best teaching tools 🌦️

Many students enjoy a controlled routine for the majority of their school life. School's timetable and other extra-curricular commitments happen like clockwork for years without interruption.

Naturally therefore it can often be quite surprising for students to experience sudden changes to their plan at the hands of weather. Whilst we try to keep to the plan, there are circumstances where the weather changes rapidly and makes an activity (e.g. rock climbing) too dangerous to proceed. For activities such as river studies though, we can simply choose a different site.

Luckily, our combined years of experience at Zen Quest have allowed us to build a large repertoire of activities - giving us a plan A, B, C, and even D!

Learning to adapt their plans to actively developing situations is a great lesson for anyone, none less than the students who join our outdoor education programmes.

Why Reflection Is the Most Important Activity We Run -

Outdoor education programmes can be busy. Rock climbing in the morning, caving in the afternoon. Followed by a plastic clean-up and recycling project the next day, all before finishing with paddle-boarding and ziplining after. For a lot of our students it will be their first time doing many of these activities, and we want to ensure they really make the most out of such new experiences.

That's why all our outdoor programmes keep time for a comprehensive review with our trained facilitators. Our reviews can vary but previously have taken the form of:

- Mindfulness & reflection activities.

- Open dialogue with peers.

- Creative expression through drawing, dancing, writing etc.

One thing all our reviews have in common is that they place emphasis on reflection. Students will think of their trip as a whole, where they felt unstoppable, where they needed extra support, and of the bonds built with their peers. Review of new experiences is crucial to their positive accommodation in students' recollection, and promotes a constructive mindset going forward.

Its quite common for outdoor education programmes to be cardinal memories of students' school life, and we want to ensure everyone gets as much out of it as possible.

Good risk management should be the top priority of any outdoor education programme.

It should keep students perfectly safe from unnecessary danger whilst also giving them the room to explore new activities and act of their own volition.

That's why we've expended a great deal of resources to develop a unique and cutting-edge risk-assessment protocol. Attentively calculating likelihood and severity of activities, sites, and more extraneous variables, we're able to build a complete picture of the risks pertaining to a given activity on a given day.
