APOD: Camelopardalids and ISS (2014 May 25)

Explanation: From a camp on the northern shores of Lake Erie, three short bright meteor streaks were captured in this composited night skyscape. Recorded over the early morning hours of May 24, the meteors are illusive Camelopardalids. Their trails point back to the meteor shower's radiant near Polaris, in the large but faint constellation Camelopardalis the camel leopard, or in modern terms the Giraffe. While a few meteors did appear, the shower was not an active one as the Earth crossed through the predicted debris trail of periodic comet 209P/LINEAR. Of course, the long bright streak in the image did appear as predicted. Early on May 24, the International Space Station made a bright passage through northern skies.

Exoplanet Out for a Quick Spin - Sky & Telescope
Astronomers have used a new technique to measure — for the first time — the spin of an extrasolar planet. In the disk of dust and gas that surrounds a newborn star, grains glom together into rocks, then boulders, then planetesimals, and then ultimately planets. At the end of the day (a.k.a. millions…

Amazing Images of Today’s Solar Eclipse from Earth and Space
The images are pouring in. While most of North America slept this AM, Australians were treated to the very first solar eclipse of 2014 earlier today. And while this particular eclipse was a partial one only from the Australian continent, it still offered observers a fine view of an often elusive nat…

Light Pollution is Stealing Our Skies
This week, April 20 – 26, 2014, is International Dark Sky Week, a global effort to get people to appreciate the skies above them. Light pollution — excess light thrown into the sky by street lights, houses, buildings, and pretty much everything that makes light — reduces our ability to see...

Astronomers Find 14 New Trans-Neptunian Objects Hiding in Hubble Data
Out beyond the orbit of Neptune lurk millions of icy bodies called Trans-Neptunian Objects. We haven’t found and seen them them all yet, but astronomers have theorized the numbers. However, since 1992, nearly a thousand TNOs have been observed. Most of them are very small and receive little sunlight…

Tonight's Lunar Eclipse was an unforgettable experience for me! It was such a great sight to see. Here is a 8-photo panoramic taken through a 12" LX Meade 200 telescope with a Canon 6D. I will be posting more photos after I get some sleep. Sharing is appreciated!
