Educational and developmental research laboratory at The Education University of Hong Kong

Appointees will be responsible for a project “PACE: A multi-disciplinary study on the roles of Pedagogy and Parents in Children’s Developmental and Educational Trajectories.” One in five people in Hong Kong lives in poverty. Both poverty and its associated effects on parental stress have negative impact on children’s development. With a rapidly greying population, the need to level the playing field and give our children the education, upbringing, and environment to be the best they can be is more urgent than ever. This project is directed at understanding the development of key childhood outcomes (numeracy, literacy, self-regulation, socio-emotional skills, physical and
psychological well-being) with a focus on understanding the interplay between the quality of classroom pedagogy and children’s developing capabilities. The appointment will be for a period of 18 to 24 months.
Appointees will require to assist in conducting literature search, liaise with participants, parents, and kindergartens, conduct experiments in kindergartens and at other locations. He/she will also collect and assist in data analysis. He/she will also be responsible to assist in manuscript and report writing,
manage project related administrative work and perform any other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator.
For Senior Research Assistant post, applicants should have a Master’s Degree in psychology or related discipline plus one year’s post Master’s Degree full-time working experience or a doctorate.
For Research Assistant I post, applicants should have a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology or related discipline. Experience in conducting psychological or educational research with children is essential.They should be excellent in both English and Cantonese. They should also have good interpersonal, communication skills. They should have the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract. Fringe benefits include contract-end gratuity, leave, medical and dental benefits.

2019.05.19 The Finnish Early Childhood Fair

Centre Co-director: Dr. Mari Nislin, is going to give a talk about "Supporting children's stress regulation and well-being in kindergarten classrooms" during the Fair.

The Finnish Early Childhood Fair is an event organized jointly by the Consulate General of Finland in Hong Kong and Macao and the Finnish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. The event will introduce and demonstrate Finnish early childhood education in practice.

Finnish education has been consistently ranked high. The Finnish early childhood education system has been deemed one of the best in the world due to its successful integration of care, education and play. They want to share this expertise, which is why they have invited principals, teachers and parents to listen and see what Finnish expertise in Early Childhood Education can offer Hong Kong. Moreover, children will be able to test and experience Finnish early childhood education in the form of workshops.

At the must-attend event with free admission, they will have workshops for kids to experience Finnish early childhood education first hand (registration required). There will also be talks for educators and parents on the secret to the success of the system.

This is a MPlus User Group meeting hosted by Prof. Kerry Lee:

2019.01.19 & 20 RA Training and Pilot Testing at Khon Kean University in Thailand
The student helpers were volunteers recruited by our MoU partner, Associate Dean Teerachai Nethanomsak, at Khon Kean University in Thailand. Prof Kerry Lee took the students, mostly new to behavioural research, through a questionnaire that they will administer to parents. He also trained them on the use of a suite of computerised working memory tasks. A number of kindergarten pupils from an affiliated school helped the students hone their skills.
