One benefit parents may not expect? Group classes teach children how to listen, respond and make music with others—not just play on their own. This sets children up for musicianship.

Group piano can be a wonderful first step for young beginners. Children learn through musical games, movement, listening and playing together—while building confidence in a warm little community.

They can watch and learn from one another, practise taking turns, work as a team and discover that making music is something joyful to share.

Sometimes, the best way to begin is together. ✨

Many parents wonder whether four, five, six or seven is the “right” age to begin piano. The truth is, there is no single perfect age.

What matters more is readiness: curiosity, the ability to listen and follow a simple instruction, developing finger coordination, and enough independence to repeat a short activity at home.

For some younger children, a playful group class is the best first step. Children who are ready for more focused, individual guidance may thrive in private lessons.

The goal is not to start as early as possible, but to begin in a way that helps the child feel successful, confident and excited to keep learning.

What if learning music felt like stepping into a storybook adventure?

This August, young musicians ages 6–7 are invited to explore Harmonyland — a magical world where music theory becomes an adventure, characters become guides, and learning happens through imagination, movement, games, storytelling, and discovery.

Along the way, children will meet Oscar Owl, Dapper Doggie D, Casey Kitty C, Ellie Elephant E, Buzz Bee B, Finni Fish F, and other Harmonyland friends as they journey through Keyboard Street, Duet Hills, Rhythm Rapids, and more.

One of my favourite parts of teaching is what happens behind the scenes.

A student plays a phrase.

We sing it.
Shape it.
Imagine it.

Sometimes we hear a bass saxophone. Sometimes a trumpet section. Sometimes a singer carrying the melody.

The notes don’t change.

But the musical picture behind them does.

And often that’s what transforms a performance from something that sounds nice into something that feels alive.

Reading notes is important.

But at some point, students need to understand how music is put together.

This week we explored major and minor chords—not just learning shapes, but learning to recognize patterns.

When students start seeing relationships between notes, they become less dependent on memorization and more confident in their musical decisions.

That’s where things start to get interesting.

Less guessing.
More understanding.
More music.
