One of my favourite parts of teaching is what happens behind the scenes.

A student plays a phrase.

We sing it.
Shape it.
Imagine it.

Sometimes we hear a bass saxophone. Sometimes a trumpet section. Sometimes a singer carrying the melody.

The notes don’t change.

But the musical picture behind them does.

And often that’s what transforms a performance from something that sounds nice into something that feels alive.

Reading notes is important.

But at some point, students need to understand how music is put together.

This week we explored major and minor chords—not just learning shapes, but learning to recognize patterns.

When students start seeing relationships between notes, they become less dependent on memorization and more confident in their musical decisions.

That’s where things start to get interesting.

Less guessing.
More understanding.
More music.
