HKUST GBUS Alumni Series - Chapter 1 / Serena Mak /

Our second video of the alumni series features Ms. Serena Mak from the class of 2004. She has also returned to HKUST to finish her Master's Studies in 2008.

Serena always looks for a purpose in what she does. During her days at Goldman Sachs, she spent a lot of time doing volunteer work. Currently, she works in Home Credit, a consumer finance company that focuses on providing responsible financing to people on their consumer durable products. In her role, she could see how the company can help people achieve a better life quality, which adds another layer of purpose on top of the work she does!

Serena has also given some advice to our fellow GBUSers. As she says, no matter what you do, put your heart to it, put your mind to it, and eventually, the opportunity will come, and you reap the benefit of it.

Let’s hear more about her story!

Our fifth story in the GBUS stories series is about Oscar Tao, a Year 4 student majoring in Global Business and Marketing.

Oscar is never afraid to try and explore different opportunities in the music industry. Although there are a high amount of academic pressures and future uncertainties, he still strives to strike a balance between his studies and music career. The road to success is never a plain sailing. Being courageous and open-minded enough to pursue one's dream is the ultimate key to self-actualisation and unleashing one’s full potential.

In this semester, we started a new video series unfolding the stories of our GBUS alumni after graduation. Our first video of this series featured Cheney Cheng from the class of 2011.

Being a serial entrepreneur, Cheney aspires to drive the company and make changes for the better. Throughout his journey in entrepreneurship, he realised that he has been empowered during his GBUS years due to the flexibility and freedom GBUS students are given to initiate. He also believes that GBUS has a strong culture of diversification in which students can be inspired and encouraged to innovate.

|2020 PMP Virtual Dinner|

For years, the Peer Mentoring Program has played a key part in establishing strong bonds within the GBUS community.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic this year, we have continued this tradition by hosting the PMP online which kickstarted yesterday.
Through in-depth discussions in mingling sessions, students from different cohorts get to intertwine and share invaluable experience and knowledge with each other, and most importantly to come together when we are physically apart.

We want to thank all the students and staff members who have poured in their efforts to make this happen during this difficult time, please stay healthy and safe while we continue to build community together!

|Global Leadership Forum|

The Global Leadership Forum is surely one of the highlight events of the GBUS program every year.

Last night, we were delighted to have Mr. Adrian Edwards as our keynote speaker in our first virtual Global Leadership Forum to speak to us about forced displacement globally and the challenges COVID-19 has brought to humanitarian workers in the world.

Mr. Adrian Edwards is the Head of Global News & Media, and Spokesperson at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. He has led the organization’s news operations and its worldwide media outreach, including communications around the annual Global Trends report and other major news events, and providing oversight of UNHCR’s work in crisis communications.

Mr. Adrian Edwards’ captivating speech prompted GBUSers to reflect on why the issue of refugees matter to us and the impact of the COVID pandemic on minorities.

We thank Mr. Adrian Edwards for promoting his vision towards creating a more inclusive humanity cultivated community and raising the civic awareness and compassion to social issues in the GBUS community. we hope our students will remember and cherish this message forever.

Global Leadership Forum 10/10/2020

The Global Leadership Forum which happens every semester is a brilliant platform for students to exchange thoughts and spark intellectually stimulating conversations.

Last night out keynote speaker Mr. Adrian Edwards brought some unexplored statistics to our students’ attention. In particular, the fact that there are 79.5 million refugees who are forcibly displaced worldwide and that two-third of those refugees come from only 5 countries had prompted GBUSers to pay attention to these issues which seemed to be unrelated to our daily lives.

During the Q&A session, Mr. Edwards interacted with our students by discussing on the efforts made by the international community on refugee issues and how it transitioned from a humanitarian crisis to a political matter.

Once again, thank you Mr. Adrian Edwards for his insightful speech and all the students and staff members who have poured in their hard work to make this happen
