🎤 First week, first impressions! What stood out to our Year 9 pupils?

The beginning of a school year is full of firsts: a new timetable to navigate, new teachers to meet, different lessons to discover, old friendships to continue and new ones to begin.

We caught up with some of them after their first week at the WASHK Senior School campus to find out what surprised them, what they enjoyed most and what they’re looking forward to in the months ahead.

📣 Introducing Mr Duncan Grewcock – History Teacher

Mr Grewcock joins our Senior School Humanities department, teaching History across Years 9, 10 and 12. With more than 20 years of international business experience, he brings a real-world perspective to his engaging, inquiry-based lessons.

Beyond the classroom, he leads our Multi-Sport ECA, helping pupils build teamwork, resilience and balance through sport. 🏉

👏 Congratulations to Lyanne in Year 6, who was recently selected for the shortlist in the Science & Technology category of the John Locke Institute 2026 Global Essay Prize!

This year’s competition attracted more than 100,000 entries from around the world, placing Lyanne’s work within the top 17.5% globally. It is an impressive achievement and a wonderful recognition of the thought and effort she puts into her work.

Lyanne has also been invited to attend the Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner in London this October as a shortlisted student. While she may not be able to join the celebration in person, we are immensely proud of all that she has accomplished.

As Head of Maths, Ms Nazareno believes in helping pupils learn from both their successes and mistakes, approach challenges with confidence and strengthen their problem-solving skills along the way.

Beyond the classroom, Ms Nazareno leads our Green Entrepreneurs ECA, where pupils reuse and repurpose discarded materials to create useful and beautiful products. ♻️

It’s been a busy and exciting start to the 2026–2027 school year! 💙 From catching up with friends to meeting teachers and settling into new routines, it’s been lovely to see our campus full of smiles and energy again. 🎒

A very warm welcome to all our new pupils and families joining the WASHK community, and welcome back to all our returning families! ✨

During our first day last Friday, Prep pupils got acquainted with their new classes, explored the school, and came together for welcome assemblies in the Atrium. 📚

Across the Senior School, pupils reconnected with their form groups and gathered for House assemblies, celebrating last year’s House awards and starting the new year with plenty of House spirit! 🏆

Here’s to a year filled with new experiences, growing friendships and many memorable moments ahead.

Their advice? Get involved, give new things a go, keep a pen handy, and don't stress if you're feeling nervous. Chances are, everyone else is feeling exactly the same way.
