Early Monday morning of June 8 Mindanao island in the southern Philippines was struck by a major earthquake of magnitude 7.8, followed by powerful aftershocks leaving widespread destructions. Several commercial buildings, schools and houses collapsed. Killing at least 37 people as of writing and injuring hundreds, rescuers were frantically searching under the rubbles of collapsed buildings for survivors. Some died by landslide that buried their houses in the mountainside in other towns.

Hundreds of houses collapsed, damaged or buried by landslide, many families have forced to evacuate. Unfortunately, as has happened in the past, recovery from natural calamities often takes a long time due to very limited government support especially in the rural areas.

Once again, Migrante Australia is appealing for your help. Migrante Australia is appealing for cash donations that will be used to buy items like rice, canned goods, bread, toiletries, medicine and other necessities for the victims and fund the relief operations. We also hope to be able to support affected families with their temporary accommodation and the repair of their homes.

Migrante Australia, a Filipino migrant network, has been at the forefront of humanitarian and advocacy work for over two decades. Known for its transparent, community-driven relief efforts and partnerships with credible local organisations, Migrante ensures that every dollar reaches those most in need.

Through our partnership with Migrante International and the Consortium for People’s Development–Disaster Response (CPD-DR), we ensure that all funds raised go directly to on-the-ground relief operations β€” providing urgent essentials such as food, medicine, and clean water to affected families.

We are calling on Filipinos, Australians, and friends to join us in this life-saving mission. Every contribution counts. Every moment matters. Help is urgently needed. Put your name & β€œEarthquake” as reference of your deposit so that we can identify each donation.

Please deposit your donation to:
BSB: 633-000
Account No.: 144174653
Account Name: Migrante Australia
Bank: Bendigo Bank

Your generosity can bring hope, relief, and recovery to thousands of families who have lost everything. Together, let’s show that compassion knows no borders.

SC Rules Lazada Riders Are Employees, Not Independent Contractors

The Supreme Court (SC) ruled that delivery riders engaged by Lazada E-Services Philippines, Inc. under so-called "Independent Contractor Agreements" were in fact regular employees entitled to the protection of labor laws.

# # # The Court likewise applied the "economic reality test" and found that the riders' services were integral to Lazada's business operations. While Lazada characterized itself as an online platform connecting buyers and sellers, the Court observed that its business model included the delivery of products, making the riders' work necessary and indispensable to its operations.- SC, Second Division, Per LOPEZ, J., J.
