Speech, Language and Reading Lab is a psycholinguistics laboratory under the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong.

Our lab’s research unifies three psycholinguistic areas—speech perception and production, language learning, and reading acquisition—and focuses on (1) understanding the mechanism that enables children to crack suprasegmental speech and orthographic codes in two different languages to formulate speech-print associations in the process of becoming biliterate; (2) uncovering the links between oral language skills and literacy outcomes; and (3) promoting an integration of speech-language-literacy in clinical and educational practice for bilingual children. Requirements: Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above in Psychology, Data Science, Psycholinguistics, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Education, Speech and Language Sciences, or a related discipline. Applicants should also have: (1) Cantonese-English bilingual proficiency; (2) Experience with behavioral experiments and quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis; (3) Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, Praat, or related research and data-analysis tools would be a strong advantage.

📢 Inviting Non-Chinese Speakers for a 40-Minute Behavioural Experiment [Win HKD$50!]

The Speech, Language and Reading Lab cordially invites you to participate in a behavioural experiment. You will be asked to respond to the symbols displayed on the computer screen by pressing the corresponding keys. This experiment takes about 40 minutes on 7/F, Meng Wah Complex Building, HKU. After finishing the experiment, you will obtain 50 HKD.

We are looking for participants who are:

1.⁠ ⁠A person who speaks fluent English and has never learned languages that use logographic writing systems (e.g., Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and etc.).

2.⁠ ⁠18 - 35 years old.

3.⁠ ⁠With normal or corrected-to-normal vision.

4.⁠ ⁠Without brain injury or developmental disorders.

This 8-week program (starting from July 2026) is for those who are passionate about child development, and curious about how scientific research is conducted in tertiary institutions.
