As a supporting organization, we are pleased to invite you to attend the ICF Symposium 2026, titled “Beyond Impairments: Working with ICF Personal Factors in Rehabilitation Practice”, co-organised by The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation and Hong Kong Shue Yan University. The symposium will be held on Saturday, 5 December 2026, from 09:30 to 17:30 (HKT) at the 9/F Auditorium, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Building.
Rehabilitation has long focused on body functions, activities, and participation — but the person behind the diagnosis matters too.
The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) recognizes the importance of personal factors, such as age, gender, values, motivation, psychological adaptation, resilience, coping styles, habits, thoughts, and feelings that each person brings to their rehabilitation journey. These factors can shape access to services, engagement in rehabilitation, goal-setting, participation, and outcomes.
Drawing on the WHO ICF framework, this symposium will bring together practitioners, researchers, and stakeholders to examine how personal factors can be intentionally integrated across both rehabilitation systems and everyday clinical encounters. The programme will also highlight evidence-informed, person-centered approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), lifestyle redesign, and empowerment strategies, which can equip practitioners to address personal factors effectively in real-world rehabilitation practice.
