【 Beyond Cultural Boundaries: Learning Chinese through Cantonese Opera! 】
“Learning a language is not only about memorising vocabulary; it also requires an in-depth experience of the local culture.”
The “Cantonese Opera Art Experience Workshop” organised earlier by the YMCA College of Careers has successfully concluded. Non-Chinese-speaking students had the opportunity to experience Cantonese opera, which has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
During the activity, non-Chinese-speaking students learned different Cantonese vocabulary items related to Cantonese opera, such as roles, personalities, costumes, water sleeves, stage steps, gestures, etc., as well as some everyday Cantonese vocabulary, such as “open the door” and “yum cha”, while exploring traditional art and learning through enjoyment.
The students also put on magnificent Cantonese opera costumes. Some students transformed into imposing generals, while others became elegant young ladies. They also gained an in-depth understanding of the two major important role types in the opera — “sheng” and “dan”. The liveliest part was undoubtedly the movement experience with horsewhips and water sleeves! Holding colourful horsewhips in their hands, the non-Chinese-speaking students lifted their legs and walked with stage steps, imitating the heroic posture of mounting a horse and galloping; afterwards, they waved the long water sleeves, demonstrating graceful movements.
This wonderful activity was an extension of the "Vocational Chinese Language Programme for Non-Chinese Speaking School Leavers for the 2025/26 School Year", supported and funded by Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (.hk) and the Language Fund, organized by YMCA College of Careers. We are dedicated to helping non-Chinese speakers enhance their Chinese language proficiency in the local workplace through practical and flexible approaches, empowering them to achieve their career aspirations.

【 超越文化界限，從粵劇體驗中學習中文】
「學習一門語言不單是背誦詞彙，更需要深入體驗當地文化。」
青年會專業書院早前舉辦的「粵劇藝術體驗工作坊」已圓滿結束。非華語同學們親身體驗了被列入聯合國教科文組織「人類非物質文化遺產」的粵劇藝術。
在活動中，非華語同學們一邊學習不同粵劇相關的廣東話詞彙（例如：角色、性格、戲服、水袖、台步、手勢等），以及一些日常廣東話詞彙（例如「開門」、「飲茶」)，一邊探索傳統藝術，一邊寓學於樂。
非華語同學們更穿上華麗的粵劇戲服，有同學化身威風凜凜的將軍，有同學則化身優雅的小姐，並深入認識了劇中的兩大重要行當 —「生」與「旦」。最熱鬧的莫過於馬鞭和水袖的動作體驗！非華語同學們手執色彩繽紛的馬鞭，提起腳走著台步，模仿上馬奔馳的英姿；隨後更舞動長長的水袖，展現優美的動作。
這次精彩活動為「2025/26學年已離校非華語人士職業中文課程」之延伸。課程由語文教育及研究常務委員會（.hk）支持、語文基金資助、青年會專業書院主辦，致力透過實用且靈活的方式，幫助非華語同學提升在本地職場的中文能力，邁向理想的職業未來。
