【Digital Playhouse 🎮 – Turning the Pages of History】
What did students read in the late Qing Dynasty?
How did people learn languages during the Republican era?
And what was written in Hong Kong's early textbooks?
🎓 The Digital Playhouse’s themed learning module— ‘Turning the Pages of History’
takes you on a journey through the evolution of education systems,
from the late Qing period to today's nine-year free education in Hong Kong.
Dr Lam Sin Manw Sophia (Department of Chinese Language Studies), the project lead, explains that
many out-of-print primary school Chinese textbooks have now been digitally preserved,
allowing users to browse online and examine the text and illustrations in detail,
bringing them back to the classrooms of yesteryear.
The platform organises scattered teaching materials into a clear learning timeline,
revealing how textbook changes reflect the evolution of society and education systems.
✨Platform features
✅ Open access: For both the public and researchers
✅ Continuously growing: The database expands with new materials over time
When old textbooks are no longer gathering dust on shelves,
but become ‘living’ documents you can explore with your own hands,
what we see is not just lessons,
but the developmental trajectory of an entire city. 🌏

'Humanities in Action' Series – Urban Environmental Humanities II
When AI starts planning our cities, does the humanities still matter?
In an age of rapid advances in smart technology,
it's tempting to place ‘technology’ and ‘the humanities’
on opposite sides of the scale. ⚖️
But Dr Jamie Wang, Assistant Professor at the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, reminds us that the real question was never one or the other.
Smart technology and AI-driven planning 🤖📊
do hold real promise for making cities more liveable and more resilient.
What matters more, however, are the principles underpinning these technologies.
Who benefits?
Who bears the cost?
When complex environmental and social issues are reduced to computable models,
are we overlooking the cultural and ethical dimensions in between?
For Dr Wang, this is precisely where the humanities step in —
bringing ethics, values, and meaning ✨
into the conversation about how cities are planned.
As our cities grow ever smarter,
we need to keep asking —
are they also becoming more humane?

「Humanities in Action」
'Humanities in Action' Series – Urban Environmental Humanities
Have you ever thought that wild boars, brown cattle, and water buffaloes are part of the city, too? 🐂🐗
Dr Jamie Wang, Assistant Professor at the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, believes that cities have never belonged to humans alone.
Plants 🌱, animals 🐦, water, and soil
all play a part in shaping the everyday spaces we call home.
This is what Urban Environmental Humanities invites us to notice —
a city is a place where humans and other living beings dwell together.
In recent years, wild boars, brown cattle, and water buffaloes have made frequent headlines.
But are they simply ‘problems’ to be managed,
or fellow residents sharing the city with us?
Dr Wang reminds us that coexisting with other lives
has always involved negotiation, necessary distance, and compromise.
When we begin to see the city through a lens that goes beyond the human,
new questions arise —
Who is urban planning designed for?
Whose space are we preserving?
And how might our cities be reimagined?
Perhaps the future of our cities
depends on how we choose to think — and act — today. 🌏

【Dr Prudence Lau Unveils New Book on Hong Kong's Art Deco Architecture ✍️ 🎉】
As a leading advocate for the study of Art Deco heritage in Hong Kong, Dr Lau Leung Kwok Prudence, Associate Dean (Quality Assurance and Enhancement) of FHM,
has co-authored a new book with Ms Yeung Winghei Vanessa (HKU MSc Conservation)— Hong Kong Art Deco Architecture: Unveiling the Hidden Heritage. 📚
The book, published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press, was officially launched at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2026, accompanied by a new book release presentation and a signing session. ✨
This is the first study to link Hong Kong's local Art Deco architecture with the social, economic, and cultural contexts that shaped it.
It explores how these buildings have shaped everyday life, and how the style —
expressed through public, residential, and commercial structures —
has become an enduring part of the spirit of modern Hong Kong. 🏙️
To mark the launch, Dr Lau also took part in a series of media interviews and public sharing events, including:
📻 Metro Radio — Feel the City
The programme will air on 1 August.
🏛 Joint Book Sharing
Co-organised by AIA Hong Kong, HKICON, and the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong, the session brought together Dr Lau, Vanessa, and architectural writer Adam Štěch for an inspiring exchange.
It is truly wonderful to see scholarly research reach beyond the classroom,
inviting everyone to rediscover the stories woven into our city.
Warmest congratulations to Dr Lau and her team for
adding an important new chapter to the study of Hong Kong's architectural heritage. ✨

【Digital Playhouse 🎮 – Sage of Pat Sin Leng】
What if learning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) felt more like playing a game? 🌿✨
Welcome to the Digital Playhouse's themed learning module: ‘Sage of Pat Sin Leng’
We've reimagined TCM knowledge through gamified design.
Three immersive stages:
Herb gathering 🌿 | Medicine preparation ⚗️ | Patient diagnosis 🩺
115 medicinal herbs and 23 ancient prescriptions passed down through millennia—all brought to life in the game.
Players step into a meticulously recreated pharmacy, experiencing digital interactions that blur the line between virtual and real.
TCM is no longer confined to textbooks—it's an adventure you unlock with your own hands 🎮.
Dr Jin Mengyao from the Department of Chinese Language Studies, who leads the project, says the team didn't want to create dry educational content.
Instead, they hoped learners would naturally absorb TCM knowledge and connect with traditional culture through gameplay.
Because learning to identify medicinal plants is actually a form of life education 💚
—when you see that all things have their purpose,
you learn to respect nature and cherish life.
