The guide provides students, teachers, and the general public with essential knowledge of trees and biodiversity, along with a series of engaging, interactive activities. Trees are vital resources in our city. They provide important functions such as shade, temperature regulation, air purification, and beautifying our environment. Beyond these, trees play a crucial role in providing food, living space, and breeding grounds for various organisms. Trees are intricately linked with biodiversity, bringing vitality and vibrancy to our urban landscape.

Exploring Urban Trees and Biodiversity is organised by the International Society of Arboriculture - Hong Kong Chapter and funded by the Environment and Nature Conservation Fund (ECF). 活動帶領大家走進城市綠蔭，發掘不一樣的樹木世界：認識城市樹木，發掘樹木背後的趣味知識與故事；尋找樹木的動物鄰居；感受香港豐富的生物多樣性；了解城市樹木的規劃、設計、管理及所面對的挑戰，及面對的挑戰。親子活動透過互動遊戲與導賞學習，讓小朋友在玩樂中親近自然，從小培養愛護環境的意識～

ISA Hong Kong Chapter 🌳 Funded by Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) 【Exploring Urban Trees and Biodiversity – Green Exploration Journeys】

🌿👀 In April and May this year, we organised three Exploring Urban Trees and Biodiversity – Green Exploration Journeys, including one family exploration activity. The activities attracted nearly 100 members of the public, who joined us in discovering the natural treasures hidden within the city.

Participants were guided into the green spaces of the city to discover a different world of trees. They learned about urban trees and uncovered the fascinating knowledge and stories behind them, searched for their animal neighbours, experienced Hong Kong’s rich biodiversity, and explored the planning, design and management of urban trees, as well as the challenges they face. Through interactive games and guided exploration, the family activity encouraged children to connect with nature through play and helped foster an appreciation of the environment from an early age.

19場校園講座及戶外考察共有超過1,500名學生參與，發掘我們城市中的瑰寶 — 樹木與生物多樣性。

ISA Hong Kong Chapter 🌳 Funded by Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) 【Exploring Urban Trees and Biodiversity – School Talks and Outdoor Field Trip】

🌿🔎The Exploring Urban Trees and Biodiversity school talks introduced primary and secondary students to Hong Kong’s trees, their importance, and the ways in which trees support urban biodiversity.

During the outdoor field trips, students visited urban parks, where instructors used fun, interactive and hands-on activities to help them learn about the benefits of trees and identify common park trees. Students also discovered the wildlife closely associated with trees and took on the role of young arborists by trying their hand at measuring trees. Along the way, they were delighted to: discover short-nosed fruit bats at their home – Chinese Fan Palm, explore the secrets of the “figs” of banyan trees with magnifying glasses, feel the sponge-like, layered bark of paperbark trees……

A total of over 1,500 students took part in 19 school talks and outdoor field trips, discovering the treasures in our city – trees and biodiversity.

How accurately can we measure the carbon impact of Hong Kong's urban trees?

In this session, Dr. Louis LEE Shing Him presents empirical research aimed at improving carbon storage estimation under local urban conditions. By analyzing total biomass and laboratory carbon content from 172 felled urban trees across 18 species, his team developed species-specific equations—further validated using machine learning and tested alongside terrestrial LiDAR scanning technologies.
