I saw a three dimensional reality being flattened into a two dimensional recreation with no adjustments. I started to make suggestions and reposition her subjects. It looked better to me but I thought, why can’t I just do the whole set up? I found a camera and began shooting what I thought was most interesting: people. As my interest in photography grew, I begin to see that I was interested in certain groups of people. Hip Hop, Surfing, and Tattooism are all subcultures that are in the precarious position of having been mainstreamed. While masses adapt to the surface of these cultures, there are people who approach it as though it is their life force and as such, their perspective tends to be a bit different. My overall work is about understanding that perception. Additionally, I shoot nudes. The human body is one of the most beautiful forms on earth, but with corporate advertising constantly telling them otherwise, many people forget that their imperfections are the best part of them. It helps make them who they are. My nudes are about celebrating the body, revisiting the newness and freedom of leaving self-consciousness behind, and refreshing the self with a confident spirit.
