A night of celebration, community, and looking ahead.* 🥂✨

The APVRS Gala Dinner brought the 19th Congress to a spectacular close at the Australian Outback Spectacular—an unforgettable evening of world-class entertainment, delicious food, and the warm camaraderie that defines our retina community.

The highlight of the night? The official handover ceremony. As we celebrated the incredible success of on the Gold Coast, we also looked forward to the future. The APVRS flag was officially passed to our colleagues in Malaysia, who will host the 20th APVRS Congress on December 3 - 5, 2027🇲🇾!

A huge thank you to everyone who made this Congress so memorable - our speakers, committee members, delegates and sponsors. The energy, the science, and the connections we’ve built here will carry us forward until we meet again in Malaysia next year. 🚀

The APVRS Gala Dinner brought the 19th Congress to a spectacular close at the Australian Outback Spectacular—an unforgettable evening of world-class entertainment, delicious food, and the warm camaraderie that defines our retina community.

One of the most anticipated highlights of , the Wet Labs, wrapped up successfully at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. Bringing together participants from across the region, this premium hands-on program offered an exceptional opportunity to enhance surgical skills through practical training led by world-class faculty.

Building on the success of APVRS 2025, this year‘s program offers an immersive training experience designed to advance clinical proficiency and master modern vitreoretinal surgical techniques. Guided by a distinguished international faculty led by Prof. Wai-Ching Lam, Prof. Lawrence Lee, and Dr. Carlo Nasol, participants are working through two competency-based tracks:

🔹 Basic Course (28 August) – Perfect for early-career ophthalmologists and clinical fellows looking to consolidate core vitreoretinal competencies and foundational surgical maneuvers, from basic instrumentation to essential suturing techniques.

🔹 Advanced Course (29 August) – Tailored for established, practicing vitreoretinal surgeons ready to refine techniques for highly complex procedures, including complicated membrane peeling, retinal detachment repair, and management of challenging surgical scenarios.

With a strict instructor-to-trainee ratio and capped seating, every participant enjoys quality microscope time and personalized, one-on-one guidance. The intimate setting fosters not just skill acquisition but also rich discussions and peer learning among surgeons at similar career stages. 🙌

For the retina heroes who take on the toughest cases.👁️

The VBS-APVRS Symposium*: Complex Surgery for Retina Heroes—a session dedicated to the boldest, most challenging surgical cases in vitreoretinal practice. 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️

Led by chairs Dr. Sean Every, Dr. Danilo Iannetta, and Dr. Nimesh Patel, the symposium featured a rapid-fire series of 11 complex case presentations. Each speaker had just 2 minutes to present their most difficult case, followed by 5 minutes of intense Q&A—a true test of skill, knowledge, and quick thinking. ⏱️

From intricate retinal detachments to surgical complications and innovative salvage techniques, every case pushed the boundaries of what‘s possible in the OR. The discussions were candid, the insights were invaluable, and the collective expertise in the room was nothing short of inspiring. 💡

A spectacular start to ! 🎉✨

Yesterday, we officially kicked off the 19th Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society Congress with a memorable Opening Ceremony at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. The energy in Arena 1A was palpable as we welcomed over 2,000 delegates from across the globe to beautiful Gold Coast, Australia.

The ceremony was highlighted by two of our most prestigious lectures:

🏆 The Tano Lecture – honoring the legacy of a true pioneer in our field.

🏆 The International Award Lecture – celebrating global contributions to vitreoretinal science.

The presentations were nothing short of inspiring, setting a high bar for the scientific program ahead. Under the Congress theme ”Where Retina Meets the Reef,“ we were reminded of the power of collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

This afternoon at , we had the privilege of hosting the Women in Ophthalmology: ‘Making it’ in Retina symposium—and what a session it was.
From funding gaps to publication biases, from mentorship to leadership—this international roster of trailblazers didn’t hold back. They shared candid insights on the unique challenges women face in science and medicine, but more importantly, they offered solutions, strategies, and a roadmap for the generations to follow. 🌏
