How do we become creative writers at a time when writing itself is being reshaped by international cultural exchange and digital innovation?
HKU’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFA) leads two core creative writing initiatives: the Black Box Writers’ Series and Black Box Magazine. Together, they provide a space for MFA students and the wider literary community to engage in creative practice and cross-disciplinary exploration.
The Writers’ Series has welcomed international award‑winning writers such as Daryl Lim Wei Jie, Emma Pei Yin, and Sheung‑King for sessions exploring craft across genres, experimentation with digital media, and creative industries in the region. Some sessions were co‑presented with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival (HKILF).
The series was further extended this summer with a poetry workshop led by Professor Luke Kennard from the University of Birmingham, winner of the 2021 Forward Prize for Best Collection and recently longlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize. Separately, Eric Yip, winner of the UK’s National Poetry Competition in 2021, discussed his creative practice with the MFA cohort during a class seminar.
Both the Writers’ Series and Black Box Magazine are physically located at the HKU Black Box and housed under the HKU Guild, with the Magazine being a Hong Kong arts, culture, and literary review published by the School of English. It features creative and critical works produced by MFA students and contributors from across HKU’s postgraduate and literary communities, and the first two issues, archived by HKU Libraries, explore the themes of “Becoming” and “Margins." The sister Black Box initiatives, in tandem with the MFA, will continue to challenge margins between genres, cultures, and media.
“I wish to advocate for greater emphasis on writing across genres, writing that transcends cultural boundaries, as well as writing for and beyond print.” — Dr Antony Huen, Director of the HKU MFA programme.

The International Genetic Engineering Machine (iGEM) Competition is the world’s largest synthetic biology competition, drawing hundreds of teams from around the world each year to Paris.
This year, Team HKU – jointly sponsored by the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Science – and the Greater Bay Area Synthetic Biology Alliance are organising the first-ever APIC as a pre-competition regional networking and idea-exchange event for teams across Asia.
What's happening:
🔬 Hands-on workshops — try the tech yourself
🎤 Guest lectures & panel discussions featuring top experts
🎨 Bio-art exhibitions that bridge science and humanities
🧬 Team project showcases from across the Asia-Pacific region
Hear from leading researchers, legislators, and entrepreneurs on how synthetic biology is shaping medicine, sustainability, and beyond. Then meet university and high school teams driving their own projects – from AI-designed proteins to smart wound dressings and more.
No prior knowledge needed. Whether you're a curious freshman, a high school student curious about university science, a past iGEM contestant, or simply someone fascinated by biology — you're welcome to join. No pre-registration needed!
