How do we become creative writers at a time when writing itself is being reshaped by international cultural exchange and digital innovation?

HKU’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFA) leads two core creative writing initiatives: the Black Box Writers’ Series and Black Box Magazine. Together, they provide a space for MFA students and the wider literary community to engage in creative practice and cross-disciplinary exploration.

The Writers’ Series has welcomed international award‑winning writers such as Daryl Lim Wei Jie, Emma Pei Yin, and Sheung‑King for sessions exploring craft across genres, experimentation with digital media, and creative industries in the region. Some sessions were co‑presented with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival (HKILF).

The series was further extended this summer with a poetry workshop led by Professor Luke Kennard from the University of Birmingham, winner of the 2021 Forward Prize for Best Collection and recently longlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize. Separately, Eric Yip, winner of the UK’s National Poetry Competition in 2021, discussed his creative practice with the MFA cohort during a class seminar.

Both the Writers’ Series and Black Box Magazine are physically located at the HKU Black Box and housed under the HKU Guild, with the Magazine being a Hong Kong arts, culture, and literary review published by the School of English. It features creative and critical works produced by MFA students and contributors from across HKU’s postgraduate and literary communities, and the first two issues, archived by HKU Libraries, explore the themes of “Becoming” and “Margins." The sister Black Box initiatives, in tandem with the MFA, will continue to challenge margins between genres, cultures, and media.

“I wish to advocate for greater emphasis on writing across genres, writing that transcends cultural boundaries, as well as writing for and beyond print.” — Dr Antony Huen, Director of the HKU MFA programme.

🎤 Can a great idea convince the room in just 60 seconds?

At the final stage of the “Technopreneurship: Launching Solutions through Innovation” programme, students face one core challenge: the Pitch.

Presenting weeks of user research, rapid prototypes, and business models within a tight timeframe tests far more than public speaking skills — it tests conviction. This hands-on experience takes students beyond traditional, passive classroom learning, empowering them to take full ownership of their ideas and grow through real-world feedback.

Through the pitching process, students master how to:

· 🎯 Communicate with Impact: Deliver core value propositions under time pressure

· 💡 Build Confidence: Stand before judges and peers to champion their ideas with conviction

· 🤝 Embrace Ownership: Shift from simply “completing an assignment” to thinking like true innovator

Congratulations to all our future entrepreneurs for an unforgettable journey. See you next summer! 👏

First Step in Action for Future Entrepreneurs 💡

Over two weeks, high school students from around the world dived into how human-centred design can tackle real community challenges through the “Technopreneurship: Launching Solutions through Innovation” programme. Jointly organised by the HKU Summer Institute and the School of Innovation, this unique experience was built specifically for the next generation of innovators.

Combining design thinking, business fundamentals, and cutting-edge AI tools, the programme guides students through the complete journey of forging innovation and building a tech startup from scratch. Beyond classroom learning and hands-on workshops in user research, rapid prototyping, and business modelling, students work closely with mentors to turn creative concepts and technology into actionable solutions — moving from “what if” to “what works.”

True impact isn't just about coming up with novel ideas, it's about addressing real-world needs. And that’s where the real power of this summer experience lies. ✨
