President Xiang Zhang engaged in a fruitful discussion with Prof. Michael Schaepman, President of the University of Zurich, during the fireside chat at the Swiss-Hong Kong Research and Innovation Reception on September 21. Moderated by Mrs. Amy Lo, Chairman of UBS Global Wealth Management Asia & Head and Chief Executive of UBS Hong Kong, both leaders shared insights on how their universities' locations within international financial centers influence their research ecosystems. They also emphasized the growing importance of international collaboration among universities to address global challenges impacting humanity.

The Reception was hosted by Swissnex – Hong Kong and the Leading House Asia Pacific at the University of Zurich, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Switzerland in Hong Kong.

校長張翔教授於9月21日在「瑞士-香港研究與創新」酒會上，與蘇黎世大學校長Prof Michael Schaepman 教授進行座談，由瑞銀財富管理亞太區聯席主管兼瑞銀香港區主管及行政總裁盧彩雲女士主持。張校長和Schaepman校長分享了他們的見解，談及國際金融中心的地理位置如何影響大學的研究生態，以及大學之間合作對於應對影響人類的全球挑戰的重要性。

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has maintained its strong global standing in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, placing 33rd globally and reaffirming its position as the highest-ranked higher education institution in Hong Kong.

The University saw a rise in its academic reputation in the latest rankings, reflecting growing global recognition of its scholarly excellence and research contributions. The results underscore HKU’s sustained strength across teaching, pioneering research, and global engagement, highlighting its success in attracting world-class talent and fostering an impactful academic environment.

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, remarked, “The true value of a university lies in its capacity to shape the future. At HKU, our focus is on pioneering new frontiers of knowledge and nurturing the visionary thinkers who will solve tomorrow’s global challenges. We will continue to advance our mission as a leading global institution, driving progress through world-class teaching and research innovation to strengthen our contributions to the betterment of Hong Kong, the nation, and the world.”

香港大學（港大）於2027年《泰晤士高等教育》世界大學排名中，名列全球第33位，繼續高踞香港高等院校之首。

For Myanmar students in Hong Kong, finding a space in the city that reflects their heritage can be rare. An exhibition at HKU’s Main Library has been trying to change that by showcasing art from the country’s emerging and well-known artists.

“Strokes of Myanmar” features works donated by Professor Ian Holliday, University Registrar and longtime scholar of Myanmar politics and governance. The collection captures everyday life, traditions, and beliefs in the country, providing a glimpse into the stories and perspectives that shape life in the region.

對於身在香港的緬甸學生來說，要在這座城市中找到一個能夠映照自身文化根基的空間並不容易。港大圖書館舉辦了一場全新展覽，透過展出當地新銳與知名藝術家的作品，致力改變這一現狀。

「Strokes of Myanmar」展出的作品由港大教務長兼長期研究緬甸政治與治理的學者何立仁教授慷慨捐贈。這批珍藏捕捉了該國的日常生活、傳統與信仰，為大眾提供一扇窺探當地生活面貌與故事視角的窗口。

Pioneering the Future of Humanoid Robotics

Humanoid robotics is entering a different phase. The field no longer needs to prove that a humanoid can walk, pick up objects, open doors, or complete a carefully prepared demo. The harder question is whether these abilities can improve predictably with more data, more deployment, and better hardware.

Archon Robotics, founded by Professor Hongyang Li, Assistant Professor and Assistant Director (AI Research and Tech Transfer) at HKU’s School of Computing and Data Science, is developing a Humanoid Foundation Model for whole-body intelligence. Its approach connects task understanding, multimodal learning, motion generation and robot control, using human and robot data, simulation and deployment feedback.

開拓人形機械人未來新篇章

當人類完成一項日常任務時，並不會將身體拆分成互不相關的模組。打開低處櫃門、彎腰取物、起身並將物品放到桌上，這一連串動作同時涉及視線調整、步伐選擇、軀幹姿態控制、手部接觸、重心轉移，以及任務判斷等能力。

若人形機械人要真正走進家庭、工廠、辦公室及城市環境，也必須具備類似的全身協調能力。關鍵在於機械人能否走得更穩、抓得更準，更在於能否透過大規模數據與預訓練，建立一套可遷移、可擴展且能持續進化的全身具身智能能力。

香港大學計算與數據科學學院助理院長（人工智能研究及技術轉移）兼助理教授李弘揚教授創立的源策未来，正致力研發面向全身智能的人形基礎模型。其技術路線結合任務理解、多模態學習、運動生成及機械人控制，並透過人類與機械人數據、模擬訓練及實際部署回饋，建立可持續擴展與進化的機械人智能體系。

MFA Students Receive Major Prizes in National Creative Writing Contest

Three fresh graduates from our Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in English programme have received First, Second, and Third Prizes in the 12th National Creative Writing Contest in English (第12届全国英语创意写作大赛). This highly competitive national competition attracts submissions from universities and student writers across China and is judged by panels of experts from leading institutions.

The awardees are:

First Prize — Vivian Liu

Second Prize — Lily Tang

Third Prize — Ruby Gao

Their outstanding achievements reflect the creativity and dedication of our growing MFA community.
We are looking forward to featuring some of their creative work in the forthcoming issue of Black Box Magazine, the School’s MFA‑centred publication.

MFA創意寫作碩士生於全國創意寫作大賽勇奪大獎

來自香港大學英語創意寫作藝術碩士（Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in English）課程的三位應屆畢業生，於第12屆全國英語創意寫作大賽中分別榮獲一等獎、二等獎及三等獎，成績斐然。本項含金量極高的全國性比賽，吸引了來自全國各大學的學生及學生作家踴躍投稿，並由多所頂尖院校的專家組成評審團進行評審，競爭相當激烈。

Meet our first batch of HKU LINKers!

We are thrilled to have over 200 students from diverse Faculties and years of study who are embarking on an exciting new journey with LINK — an interdisciplinary, credit-bearing course that combines innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking, and leadership for the 21st century.

Launched this semester, LINK aims to equip students with essential skills while fostering collaboration with industry leaders from various sectors. Over the course of the semester, students will engage in dynamic workshops, develop critical competencies, and culminate their experience with a 3-week immersion trip to Shanghai this winter, gaining invaluable exposure and practical, hands-on project ex*****on experience.

At the lecture on 16 September, we were privileged to welcome Mr Wilson Fung, CEO of MicroBit Holdings Limited, LINK’s corporate sponsor, who shared inspiring insights, “Do not chase the hype. It’s important to build analytical skills and judgment in today’s changing financial world. These are lifelong learning skills that will provide a strong foundation, regardless of the field you pursue after graduation.”

Professor Jay Siegel, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKU, delivered the opening remarks, saying, “I am grateful to see so much enthusiasm among our students who are stepping forward to develop leadership, immerse themselves in this new experiential learning journey at HKU, and grow as future leaders, innovators, and changemakers. A heartfelt thank you to our speakers, partners, and students for making the launch of LINK such a remarkable start!”
