I remember the first position where I held a title equated to "leadership". Someone told me "The hardest part is managing people." People are messy. People are flawed. People are opinionated, lazy, lost, confused, and sometimes, even mean. That was not the type of "boss" that I wanted to be.
Putting people on a team led with humility, vision, and innovation can transform them into valuable assets: passionate team members, synchronous partners, creative collaborators, iterative visionaries, and empowered leaders. But you have to take care of your team.
The difference between "managing people" and building a team exists on a fine line between a drive to chase innovation and being good enough to pass. Leaders who build teams strive for more. They communicate ideas, inspire others, and give ownership to the team to build on the collective vision.
A boss gets people to work out of fear. A great leader motivates their team to take ownership of the goals and ideas, resulting in collective success.
