𝘓𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘢 (L.) Pers.

Although commonly cultivated along roadsides and in public gardens, the Lagerstroemia species legally protected under Chapter 96A of the Laws of Hong Kong (Forestry Regulations). In urban Hong Kong, it usually forms a small to medium-sized tree, whereas wild individuals can reach heights over 20 meters. Its dense, rot-resistant timber is well-suited for diverse industrial applications. Medicinally, the plant exhibits versatile properties—the bark functions as a laxative, the seeds contain narcotic attributes, and the roots offer astringent benefits. Consequently, it has become a focus of modern pharmacological research, notably in the field of diabetes management.

Botanical Illustrated Guide to Hong Kong Native Plants (Volume III): Rare and Endangered Plants

🌉 Botanical Illustration: A Bridge to the World of Botany ☘️

Plant taxonomy is by no means an unreachable discipline. In addition to exquisite botanical illustrations, Botanical Illustrated Guide to Hong Kong Native Plants (Volume III): Rare and Endangered Plants (“illustrated book”) provides detailed annotations of plant anatomy and microscopic structures, helping plant enthusiasts master academic terminology in plant taxonomy.

By using this illustrated book as a bridge, we hope to empower plant lovers to delve deeper into the world of taxonomy through self-study, contributing together to the conservation of Hong Kong's native, rare and endangered plants.

Botanical Illustrated Guide to Hong Kong Native Plants (Volume III): Rare and Endangered Plants is officially launched today!

🔍 Hong Kong's First STEAM Educational Material for Botanical Illustration 🎨

Introducing Hong Kong’s first Botanical Illustrated Guide which featuring both colour illustrations and line drawings, Botanical Illustrated Guide to Hong Kong Native Plants (Volume III): Rare and Endangered Plants (“illustrated book”), focusing on 20 Hong Kong’s native, rare and endangered plants, was released this year by the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium. With the generous sponsorship of the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation and the support of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), this illustrated book continues to honor the scientific spirit of the world-renowned botanist Professor Shiu-Ying Hu, while upholding the meticulous precision and rigor of botanical illustration.

Building upon the tradition of the previous two volumes, this illustrated book seamlessly blends botanical science with art. The newly added colour illustrations were produced with reference to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. This allows teachers and students to analyze plant colours and identify plant characteristics through scientific measurement, significantly gaining a deeper understanding of plant taxonomy through botanical illustration.

〖雞蛋花 Frangipani〗
𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 species

Native to Central America, plumeria is now widely cultivated for ornamental purposes across tropical and subtropical regions. Most locally grown trees maintain a height under 10 meters and adapt to diverse environments. Featuring a variety of floral colors such as white, red, pink, and yellow, it remains a popular choice for garden landscaping.

The dried blossoms serve as a common Chinese medicinal herb used to clear heat, dispel summer dampness, arrest diarrhea, and ease coughs and phlegm. It is also a core ingredient of the traditional "Five Flower Tea." Recipes for this herbal brew typically select from a combination of herbs including plumeria, honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, kapok flower, kudzu flower, spiked prunella, pagoda tree flower, and herba artemisiae scopariae.
