As the sweetness of the Jewish New Year settles in, the celebratory spirit at Carmel School is just getting started. Welcome to our 36th Anniversary year!

In our tradition, the number 36 holds a profound meaning: Double Chai (Double Life). It is a symbol of vitality, strength, and a lasting legacy, making it the perfect theme for this milestone.

Over the past three and a half decades, Carmel has grown from a modest community vision into a premier, all-through IB World School in Hong Kong. While we are incredibly proud of our expanded world-class campuses and our students' top-tier global academic achievements, our greatest pride remains the vibrant, connected family we’ve built along the way.

In preparation for Sukkot, Carmel Elementary students visited the Chabad Sukkah to experience the holiday’s traditions firsthand. The students prepared by creating original artwork to decorate the space, and enjoyed a tactile lesson on the Four Species bringing the holiday's themes of unity and nature to life.

Today our Elsa High School section took part in a non-uniform day to raise funds for the Crossroads Foundation Nepal flood relief efforts.

Alongside the fundraiser, students gathered in the Auditorium to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with lantern making, Chinese calligraphy, and a festive Kahoot quiz. Thank you to everyone who participated and brought in a donation to support the cause!

In Jewish Studies, Grade 9 and 10 explored the different types of Sukkot discussed in the Mishnah. Partnering with our Design Department, they brought these ancient texts to life by building scale models for an interactive exhibition. To wrap up the project, our high schoolers presented their creations to Grade 4 and 5 students, turning ancient history into an immersive, hands-on learning experience for the younger grades.

A hard-fought 4-1 win away against CAIS last week. After a scoreless first half in the heat, the U14 Girls dug deep after the break. Maya opened the scoring before CAIS equalized from a free-kick. Tali then assisted Maya for the second, and added two goals of her own to secure the three points. Well played to Tali for earning Player of the Match.

In this week’s Parashah, Parashat Ha’azinu, we arrive at one of the most emotional moments in the entire Torah. Moses, standing on top of Mount Nebo, looks out over the Promised Land. He has spent forty years leading the Israelites through the wilderness: guiding them, teaching them, and caring for them. Yet G-d tells him that he will only see the land from a distance, he will not actually enter it himself.

On Tuesday 22 September our Elsa High School section is raising funds for the Crossroads Foundation to support their critical disaster relief efforts following the devastating floods in Nepal.

Students are invited to show their support by coming dressed in non-uniform Mid-Autumn colours: red, yellow/gold, or white, and bringing a donation for the cause!

During morning recess, there will be special student-led activities in the Auditorium including lantern making, Chinese calligraphy, and a Mid-Autumn Kahoot quiz!

Let’s dress in full colour and come together to make an impact for those in need.

In honor of the upcoming solemn day of Yom Kippur, our high school students had the privilege of hearing from Rabbi Avtzon, the founder of Chabad in Hong Kong. He delivered an inspiring talk reframing teshuva not as something daunting or intimidating, but as a meaningful opportunity to pause, reflect, and begin fresh. Drawing on the story of Moses (Moshe), Rabbi Avtzon reminded us all of the power of growth and second chances.

Following his remarks, our students were treated to a beautiful musical performance by Chazan Yechiel Yoskovich, the Ashkenazi Chazan at the Ohel Leah Synagogue for the High Holidays. His moving renditions of Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold) and the special Yom Kippur prayer Ochila l'Kel provided an uplifting emotional backdrop, leaving our school community inspired and spiritually prepared for the Day of Atonement.
