A 5-year-old Hong Kong boy in the elevator left me shaken.

Yesterday after my workout, the elevator doors were closing when a small voice shouted, “Hold it!”

In rushed a lively 5-year-old boy with a round face and bright eyes — he looked just like Russell from Up, but a real Hong Kong kid.

He casually asked, “Which floor?”

Then, without missing a beat, he turned his phone toward me: “Is this real?”

It was the Tsim Sha Tsui fire with the burning exterior wall.

I told him not to trust everything online and to fact-check it.

One floor later, he dashed out without looking back.
That brief encounter stayed with me.

"jau5 有" (to have) is one of the first Cantonese words that learners encounter. Do you know that it can form a lot of interesting daily expressions? Let's have a look!

Cantonese expressions with "jau5" (to have):

1) jau5 liu2 - 有料 knowledgeable, capable
- lit. have content/material
E.g. keoi5 hou2 jau5 liu2, 　man6 keoi5 mat1 je5 keoi5 dou1 sik1.
　　(s/he)(very)(knowledgeable)(ask)(s/he)(what)(s/he)(also)(know)
　　S/he is very knowledgeable. Whatever you ask her/him, s/he knows the answer.

2) jau5 jing4 - 有型 stylish, cool, good-looking (jing4 can also be used alone)
- lit. have shape/form
E.g. nei5 zoek3 　 sai1 　zong1 　dak6 bit6 jau5 jing4!
　　(you)(wear)(western-style)(suit)(especially)(stylish)
　　You look especially stylish in a suit!

3) jau5 mai5 - 有米 rich, have a lot of money
- lit. have rice
E.g. keoi5 hou2 jau5 mai5, so2 ji5 maai5 je5 m4 tai2 gaa3 cin4.
　　(s/he) (very) (rich) 　 (so)　(buy things) (not)(look at)(price)
　　S/he is very rich, so s/he never pay attention to the price when shopping.

4) jau5 zo2 - 有咗 pregnant
- lit. have had
E.g. ngo5 jau5 zo2 sei3 go3 jyut6 　laa3.
　　(I)　(pregnant)(four)(MW)(month)(PARTICLE)
　　I am four months pregnant already.

5) jau5 fan2 - 有份 involved in something
- lit. have a share
E.g. ngo5 dou1 jau5 fan2 bong1 nei5.
　　(I)　(also) (involve in) (help)　(you)
　　I also helped you ("they"/sb. were not the only ones helping you).

6) jau5 paai4 - 有排 take a long time
- lit. have row / have a period of time
E.g. tiu4 deoi2 gam3 coeng4, jat1 ding6 jau5 paai4 dang2.
　　(MW)(queue)(so)(long)　(must) (take a long time)(wait)
　　The queue is so long. We definitely have to wait for a long time.

莊子經過梁國，魏王（就是惠子相梁的梁惠王）召見莊子。莊子身著粗布大褂，補丁摞補丁，見了梁惠王還是不忘整理了一下衣冠以示尊重。莊子把系在腰間當腰帶的麻繩掖了掖，把露腳趾頭的鞋子上的鞋帶緊了緊。

梁惠王看到莊子第一眼愣了三秒道：「先生才學智慧過人，可你怎麼如此潦倒不堪啊？」

莊子說「大王謬也，我是貧窮，但我並不潦倒！世人不能回歸天性與天道，那才是真正的潦倒。沒有獲得財富，沒有華麗的衣服和外在的裝飾，這叫貧窮。這是物質上的貧窮而不是精神上的疲憊和潦倒。我的貧窮是因為時運不濟，英雄無用武之地罷了。」

莊子繼續給梁惠王做了比喻：「你看那樹林間的猴子，身手靈巧，快如閃電，能在樹枝間飛來飛去，連神射手也望塵莫及，不能奈他何，可是它一旦落入荊棘叢中就老實了，幾乎不敢動，不敢跳不敢蹦，一下子失去了原本的靈活性。為什麼會這樣？就是因為環境改變了，而不是猴子失去了天性和本領。梁惠王啊，你看如今天下無道，亂象叢生，人的天性被壓制，我想大展身手，又怎麼可能呢？」
