What happens when learning moves beyond the classroom and into the real world? ๐ŸŒโœจ

For four weeks, our Grade 9 students stepped into the role of ethnographers, exploring the people, culture and heritage of Tai O. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ They researched its history, learned from guest speakers, interviewed local residents, gathered stories firsthand, and transformed their findings into short-form video narratives. ๐ŸŽฅ

But the learning went far beyond research and video-making. Students were challenged to defend their creative choices, respond to live questions, reflect on their growth, and see a familiar place through new perspectives.

For some, the experience sparked a stronger sense of advocacy and responsibility for cultural preservation. For others, it meant finding the confidence to speak with strangers and present in front of an audience. ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ’ช

This is what project-based learning can look like: real people, real places, real questions โ€” and learning that stays with students long after the project ends. ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ“š In the biggest classroom on campus
Inspired by Peter H. Reynoldsโ€™ The Dot, our Library hosted DSHKโ€™s first-ever International Dot Day Week. There were dual-language read-alouds, library windows covered in bright, colourful dots, and students from across the school coming together to create, collaborate and make their mark. Big nod to Eric Leung!

๐Ÿ”จ And in between lessons
Over in the Innovation Forge, our makerspace, a simple request to mount a bookshelf became something above and beyond. Ricky Siegel made a quick sketch, used only leftover materials from past projects, and spent three working hours squeezed between lessons. The result is an upcycled shelf with extra storage for the Base Camp, run by our outdoor learning specialist Michael Hoskins.

Leadership starts with seeing whatโ€™s possible, whether thatโ€™s in a single dot or a pile of offcuts! ๐Ÿ’™

In days of yore, the poet Su Shi wrote these words for a loved one far away. This week, the same moon rose over DSHK and lit up stories, lanterns and art in every corner of our school ๐Ÿฎ
Same moon. New storytellers. Continued traditions and celebrations of Chinese culture.

DSHK students were featured on ViuTV's program โ€œๆ”พๅญธ็ŽฉDๅ’ฉโ€, reflecting on what they took away from playing against Magnus Carlsen and other chess grandmasters.

Asked what the experience taught them, our students returned to two ideas in their own words: logical thinking and critical thinking. Playing a master, they explained, exposes the gap between a move that feels right and a move that holds up under scrutiny. You learn to reason through a position step by step, to question your first instinct, and to understand the idea behind your opponent's move rather than simply react to it.

That habit โ€” reasoning carefully before committing, then examining your own reasoning โ€” is one of the most transferable things a student can build, on the board or off it.

What if students didnโ€™t just learn in a classroom โ€” but helped create the learning experience itself? ๐ŸŒฟ

That question inspired Basecamp, a program created and pioneered by our Outdoor Education Specialist, Michael Hoskins.

From Grade 5 students exploring hydroponics and biodiversity, to Grade 4 turning nature into a space for exploring conflict and harmony, and our youngest learners discovering the world through their senses โ€” Basecamp brings Units of Inquiry beyond the classroom and into authentic, hands-on experiences.

In our latest blog, Michael shares the story behind Basecamp, how it has come to life at Dalton School Hong Kong, and why he believes some of the most powerful learning happens when students become creators alongside their teachers.

At DSHK, the L.E.A.D. Support Services is a cornerstone of our commitment to whole-child education. Designed to intentionally support social-emotional development, executive functioning, and academic growth, L.E.A.D. empowers students with the foundational skills they need to thrive.

Through a series of enriching dog therapy sessions within our L.E.A.D. Support Services, students demonstrated meaningful progress in areas that directly impact classroom success. Beyond building confidence and emotional awareness, they strengthened focus, listening skills, task completion, and the ability to follow directions with greater independence.

In a structured, supportive environment, students practiced patience, self-regulation, and sustained attention, skills that translate into stronger academic engagement and resilience when facing challenges.

The transformation was clear. Students approached new experiences with calm bodies and confident minds. Peer connections deepened. Independence grew. Academic readiness strengthened.
