The School of Communication (the then Department of Communication) at Hong Kong Baptist University was originally founded in 1968. It provides the only comprehensive range of programmes in communication available in Hong Kong at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Within the four-year undergraduate curriculum of the Bachelor of Communication (Honours)* programme, the School currently offers three choices of major to follow the General Education and core communications courses. These majors are:
Game Design and Animation
Journalism - Within this major, there are two concentrations: Journalism, Data and Media Communication. All provide a solid training in practical journalism skills, including the increasingly vital areas of digital and social media, grounded in a critical examination of the role of journalism and an awareness of its ethical dimension. Public Relations and Advertising - This major offer two concentrations which provides opportunities for students to practise the art of effective communication, in public relations, advertising and branding, and organizational communication contexts.
*Under the updated programme - Bachelor of Communication (Hons) (Journalism and Digital Media / Public Relations and Advertising), from Academic Year 2022/23 onwards, both Journalism and Digital Media (JOURDM) Major and Public Relations and Advertising (PRA) Major will adopt broad-based admission. Under JOURDM, both Chinese Journalism and International Journalism concentrations (JOURDM) will be merged into the Journalism concentration, while under PRA, Organizational Communication concentration will be combined into Public Relations concentration. The new Major, Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Game Design and Animation, will adopt programme-based admission. At postgraduate level, the range of options includes masters in Communication, Producing for Film, Television and New-media, International Journalism, Media Management, AI and Digital Media and research degrees (MPhil and Ph.D). Housed in a new, purpose-built building, the School offers targeted attention from faculty, as well as access to the latest equipment. The School maintains close connections with Hong Kong's media and creative industries, and given its long history and influence, it is not surprising that many of the most senior positions in these industries are occupied by its alumni. These relationships confer the vital asset of reputation as well as providing a resource of expertise to current students and offering networking opportunities for alumni. The Alumni Sharing Forum, featuring distinguished film directors, screenwriters, communication directors who graduated from the School; and the Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop, which gives students access to winners of the United States' most prestigious award for journalism, are all recent examples of events organised by the School to foster connections with the industries and global talents in which its current students will work in the future.

🥳 Commencement is always filled with moving moments, and the heartfelt address by our 𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗟𝘂𝗻 Kitty Lun felt like family coming home. ✨ We were deeply honoured to welcome her back, an advertising titan whose legendary career and global accolades, including the New York Festivals Lifetime Achievement Award, make her a true industry icon 🌟.
Returning to campus, Kitty shared an inspiring message with our Class of 2026, challenging them to embrace an era free from traditional gatekeepers 💌:
🤝 Connecting this global tech perspective back to our roots, Kitty reminded our students that their years on campus were about building a lifelong compass. 🧭
In an AI-driven world that can easily generate endless content, she noted that true creativity comes from real human living. True communication is having the courage to say something honest about being human. As Kitty reminded us, our School motto, Truth is Virtue (唯真為善), is not just a slogan on a wall. In a world drowning in digital noise, it is our young communicators' competitive advantage 💪🏻.

🌟 With four decades of leadership in the communication industry and a career recognised by honours like the Distinguished PR Professional Award 🏆, BC is living proof of where a journey can take you. Grounding the audience with a reality check on the digital age, he shared:
💙 In a world obsessed with fleeting metrics, his words are an inspiring reminder of our true mission as communicators. 💪 Real influence isn't about creating short-lived noise; it is about building deep, lasting connections rooted in integrity. This beautifully mirrors our School motto: 'Truth is Virtue' (唯真為善). 🤝

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Professor Emeritus John Powers, who dedicated a quarter-century of distinguished service to the Department of Communication Studies of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University. We join his family, friends, and the generations of students he inspired in honouring his memory and lasting legacy.
Professor Powers served in the Department from September 1993 to June 2018. He will be remembered for his immense contributions to our School and the University, and the lasting impression he left on generations of students, peers, and colleagues.
Professor Powers was widely known for his kindness and unwavering commitment to education. He generously gave people his time, listened carefully, and had a unique way of seeing the potential in others. Many who studied and worked with him will remember how he encouraged growth and instilled confidence in those around him. He brought a genuine passion to education, and his influence remains present in the lives and work of everyone he taught, mentored, and worked alongside.
Professor Powers will be greatly missed and warmly remembered, especially by many of those who will fondly recall the Coke that was always on his desk or in his hand.
