The Advocacy and Mooting Society (AMS) is a nonprofit-making student organization under the Faculty of Law, the University of Hong Kong. The objectives of AMS are to arouse students’ interest in advocacy, and to assist them with the enhancement of their mooting skills. Since its establishment in 2002, AMS has organized various activities, most notably mooting competitions, so as to develop law students into future good advocates. Through these activities, the AMS introduces to law students the concept of mooting and the underlying techniques, and provides them with moot training sessions with feedback from experienced practitioners. In addition, by inviting veteran legal practitioners and seasoned mooters to share their invaluable experience as advocates, it is hoped that law students will acquire a better understanding of the role of advocacy in legal practice. Encouraged by its success in the past, and the generous support from the Faculty of Law and many valuable sponsors, AMS will continue to strive for professionalism, serve its mission and achieve its goals in the years to come. The AMS Orientation Series 2026, Aurelia, has come to an end! We would like to thank all freshmen for their enthusiastic support and participation, as well as the student helpers who have kindly assisted us in ensuring the smooth operation of the Series.

In particular, our Orientation Day 2026 was successfully held on 5th September, 2026 (Saturday). Participating freshmen had the opportunity to play intriguing law-related games at various stations on campus, experience mooting, gain insights into advocacy by listening to sharings delivered by distinguished barristers-at-law, as well as mingle with our guests and fellow law seniors. We hope that all freshmen enjoyed the event and gained a better understanding of advocacy and mooting.

We would also like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our guest speakers at the Orientation Day 2026, namely Ms. Carol Wong, Ms. Becky So and Mr. Jason Louie. Their valuable insights and remarks on advocacy, mooting and the barrister’s profession have certainly inspired freshmen and our Executive Committee members alike.

Hong Kong Bar Association, Denis Chang’s Chambers and Parkside Chambers Present: Basic Law Mooting Series 2026

The Advocacy and Mooting Society, Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong (“AMS”), is delighted to present the upcoming Basic Law Mooting Series 2026 (“the Series”), which consists of a workshop and a two-round mooting competition.

Since its establishment in 2002, AMS has organised different events, most notably mooting competitions, to encourage law students’ interest in mooting and nurture them into future advocates.

The Series aims to provide law students of the University of Hong Kong an opportunity to develop their advocacy skills while deepening their understanding of Constitutional Law in Hong Kong.

Workshop
Date: 23rd September, 2026 (Wednesday)
Time: 18:00 - 20:00
Venue: Rayson Huang Theatre, Main Campus, The University of Hong Kong

Preliminary Round
Date: 10th October, 2026 (Saturday)
Time: 09:30 - 18:30
Venue: Advocacy Labs, Cheng Yu Tung Tower, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road
Dress code: Law Formal
Fees: Free of charge for AMS members; $50 for non-AMS members
*The two teams with the highest scores from each division will proceed to the Final Round.

Final Round
Date: 24th October, 2026 (Saturday)
Time: 09:30 - 13:30
Venue: High Court Building, 38 Queensway, Admiralty (TBC)
Dress code: Law Formal

Eligibility
Application is open to students registered under the Faculty of Law, the University of Hong Kong. All HKU LLB and double-degree law programmes year 2 or above undergraduates, JD. PCLL, MCL, LLM students are eligible to apply.
The Series is divided into two divisions. The Junior Division is open to students who are currently taking a course on Constitutional Law of Hong Kong, while the Senior Division is open to students who have completed a course on Constitutional Law of Hong Kong, or have previously completed a law degree. Applicants should form a team of two by themselves to be eligible for the competition. Teams consisting of one student who is currently taking a course on Constitutional Law and one who has already completed the course should apply for the Senior Division.

Students who are interested, please find another teammate to form a two-person team, and submit your application via the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/QobFU2nd7JsTeM5cA
on or before 20th September, 2026 (Sunday) at 23:59. Please note that each team should only submit 1 application.
If the number of applications exceeds the limit, priority will be given to AMS members, and the remaining vacancies will be determined by drawing lots.

On behalf of the Advocacy and Mooting Society, Faculty of Law, the University of Hong Kong (“AMS”), the Executive Committee would like to extend its warmest welcome to all incoming freshmen to the Faculty of Law!

The theme of this year’s Orientation Series is Aurelia. Aurelia, which means “golden sunrise” in Latin, mirrors the paths of excellence that law school freshmen aspire to embark on. The Orientation Series aims to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about advocacy and mooting while bonding with fellow law students at the dawn of a new journey ahead. Through this, we hope that freshmen can equip themselves with the skills necessary to overcome any difficulties during their studies at university and radiantly develop their legal passions.

The Registration Day provides you with an opportunity to know about the only student body at HKU which offers mooting experiences to law students. As a registered AMS member, you can join our mooting events for free.

Venue: G/F Lobby, Cheng Yu Tung Tower, Centennial Campus, the University of Hong Kong

The Annual Book Sale is a welfare event held by AMS, where registered AMS members may purchase brand-new law textbooks at discounted prices. Further details will be announced in a separate email in due course.

The Inauguration Ceremony of the 25th Cabinet of the Advocacy and Mooting Society (“AMS”) was successfully held on 26th June 2026 (Friday), commencing Elucido’s service as the Executive Committee of the AMS.

The name of our Cabinet, Elucido, denotes “to light” and “to enlighten” in Latin. Advocacy is the art of translating linguistic nuance into courtroom dialogue that illuminates every corner of society. We endeavour to cultivate the torch bearers of tomorrow. Amidst timeless legal principles and a rapidly evolving landscape, we aspire to deliver the truth with the utmost clarity, bringing light where it is needed most.

The theme of this year’s Inauguration Ceremony is “Primordium”. The Latin term “Primordium” refers to the earliest stages of development, but its symbolic significance for the Ceremony extends far beyond. It signals the dawn of a new era of growth and evolution which, while embracing the promise of continual progression, will also carry the foundations of justice and equity upon which AMS and the entirety of its legacy are established.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Edward Chan S.C., Mr. Anthony Neoh S.C., Mr. Clive Grossman S.C., Mr. Horace Wong S.C., and Mr. Tony Ko, distinguished guests, and student representatives for sharing their valued time in attending our Inauguration Ceremony.
