Congratulations to AISHK alumni Ivan Yue! 🎉

Ivan represented Australia at the 3rd CHITF Taekwon‑Do Open World Championship in Puerto Rico (14–16 November 2025), earning a Silver Medal in the Patterns 18–35 Years Male 2nd–1st Gup category (red to red‑black belt level).

“The routine I performed is named Chong Moo, the 11th pattern in ITF‑style taekwondo and the final routine before reaching black belt. It has 30 moves and is considered one of the most difficult patterns because it has no symmetry or repetition, making it much harder to learn and memorise.”

“I grew up watching action movies and superhero cartoons, which motivated me to start martial arts. I began taekwondo in Year 2 through the AISHK ECA program and it’s been one of my biggest passions ever since," he shared.

His message to younger students:

“Growth only happens outside your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to push yourself. Your limits are only what you perceive them to be. Do the things that scare you or make you uncomfortable because that’s how you learn and grow.”

Alumna Miu Tanaka Swims English Channel Solo

On 24 August, Miu swam the English Channel solo in an astonishing 13 hours and 16 minutes. Just two weeks later, she joined a Hong Kong relay team to complete a double crossing in 25 hours and 42 minutes - becoming the first HK team to achieve this feat! 🎉

“Swimming has taught me perseverance and the ability to stay mentally strong even when things get tough. Ultra marathon swimming is nothing about talent or something you’re born with, it’s all about the effort you put in, the commitment and the mental toughness," she shared.

What’s next for Miu? Competing in The Ocean's Seven, a long-distance swimming challenge that consists of crossing seven of the most difficult water channels in the world. These include the English Channel, the North Channel, and the Strait of Gibraltar. She’s also planning for a long-distance swim in Tasmania next year and a 24+ hour swim in Europe in 2027.

AISHK graduates pursue diverse careers in the ever-changing jobs market, globally. Ivana Yue, Class of 2024, was recently featured in an ABC News article exploring the rise of Asian music markets and the opportunities they offer emerging artists.

Currently a first-year student at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney, Ivana is developing her craft in sound design and musical theatre. Her work draws on her multicultural background.

“My favourite thing to do is to take patterns and melodic repetitions and themes from Asian-inspired music and put it into Westernised orchestral pieces,” Ivana said in the article. “I also love using different Chinese scales as well, and even Japanese scales.”

Alumna, Megan Griffiths recently took on the challenge of running the Bath Half Marathon, in honour of her father, Andy Griffiths, an AISHK staff member. Meg also chose to fundraise for Bowel Research UK, raising ÂŁ1,368. She shared her motivations and experience of running the half marathon,

My dad and I were really close growing up, and he is, and will always be the person I look up to in life, so losing dad was extremely painful and difficult for me and my family. So, one night, I spontaneously chose to sign up for the Bath Half Marathon to fundraise for Bowel Research UK.

I chose to fundraise for this charity because sadly bowel cancer was the cancer my dad suffered from, so I thought there was no better way to honour him than to raise money for this amazing charity. In 5 months of fundraising, I managed to raise ÂŁ1,368, which blew my mind. I am so grateful for the support from the AISHK community for donating and spreading awareness for such a meaningful and important cause.

The run took place in Bath, UK on 16 March. Bath is such a beautiful part of the UK and I was blessed with sunny clear skies which definitely made the run a lot more enjoyable. On the day of the run, I was extremely nervous and intimidated, because I have never run that distance, but all the runners and people on the sidelines were so supportive and had such encouraging signs and posters which definitely kept me going. Additionally, my mother, brother and friends all travelled to Bath to support me, and seeing them on the side cheering me on gave me a boost of energy to continue. I am eternally grateful for them showing up.

According to Bowel Research UK, bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK. Almost 44,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year. Like all illnesses, it is important to raise awareness and funds. The charity provides essential support services for patients and families to help improve the quality of life and cancer care for those affected.

Seeing my dad battle cancer for 18 months is what motivated me to get educated, want to raise awareness and help fundraise for charities that have given my dad and many others the support and care they need.

Running the Bath Half-Marathon is by far one of my best and most meaningful milestones that I have achieved in my life. I felt his presence so wholeheartedly and I am so happy and proud that I did it for dad.
