[Recap] SATA Satellite: Sonic Art Workshop

The two-session Sonic Art Workshop has successfully concluded—thank you all for your active participation!

This time, we invited everyone to set aside the habit of vision-first perception and instead use sound as a guide to listen to the texture and spatial qualities of objects, venturing into the orderly chaos of Sheung Wan’s traditional grocery store Chu Wing Kee.

The shop owner, Mr Chu, not only personally demonstrated how to assess product quality through sound, but was also inspired by participants’ creations to handcraft a miniature version of Chu Wing Kee, capturing the store’s unique character and essence.

【SATA Satellite】Graphic Art Workshop

In the digital age, generating AI images and outputting prints takes next to no effort. Yet when members of the Graphic Art group from last year’s "SATA Summer School" stepped into Kwong Wah Printing Company in Sheung Wan, they discovered a different rhythm and value among traditional letterpress machines and lead types.

As early as the 19th century, Central and Sheung Wan gradually became Hong Kong’s printing stronghold. Type foundries, paper merchants, and print shops filled every street, producing business cards, letter paper, and receipts for all trades. The local printing industry reached its golden age in the 1960s and 70s, but shrank rapidly as offset printing and digital waves swept through in succession.

Founded in 1954, Kwong Wah Printing Company is owned by Master YAM Wai-sang, one of the last remaining witnesses of the Central district's printing industry. The shop still preserves a discontinued Heidelberg letterpress machine. Master Yam shares that it took him four full years to achieve "oneness" with the machine. In an era that relentlessly pursues speed and convenience, this serves as a timely reminder—that technology is never merely about tapping a screen in detachment; it can be intimately tied to bodily touch and the rhythm of labour.

Inspired by the journey of the Graphic Art group from the "SATA Summer School", this workshop inherits its spirit and invites everyone to learn the story of traditional letterpress printing through Kwong Wah. Participants will then use unconventional materials to print images artistically—experiencing the tactile nature of the printing process and discovering the poetry found between technical constraints and imperfections.

【SATA Satellite】Sonic Art Workshop

In the era of online shopping, we are used to shopping with our eyes — scrolling through screens and checking online reviews, all in pursuit of speed and convenience.

Yet "Chu Wing Kee", an old grocery shop on Possession Street in Sheung Wan, invites you to slow down. The story begins in 1959, when the father of owner Mr CHU Yiu-cheong began hawking on the streets, selling sundries sourced from factories across Sheung Wan and Sai Wan. In the 1960s, they moved into a market stall, and in 1975 they finally settled into a ground-floor shop, carrying the daily memories of several generations in the community.

Stepping inside Chu Wing Kee, you will find that it is more than just a shop — it feels more like a museum showcasing treasures of different eras and materials. Every item is arranged according to the owner's vision; seemingly ordinary, each carries its own story, waiting for you to slow down and open your senses to truly experience it.

Last year, the artist mentors and mentees of the "SATA Summer School" followed sound as their guide to explore this "orderly chaos" of a grocery jungle. This time, we invite you to join us in discovering the treasures of Chu Wing Kee, learning from Mr CHU's approach to shop curation, and collecting fragments of the city's sensory landscape along the exploratory journey to curate your very own mini grocery shop* with your own hands!

Guest: Mr CHU Yiu-cheong (Chu Wing Kee)

【SATA Satellite】Electronic Art Workshop

In an era where the camera rules, we are used to experiencing the city through our eyes. But have you ever touched and listened to the textures of the city?

Tucked between the high-rises of Sheung Wan and Central, Man Wa Lane (Chop Alley) has been standing for ninety years. Today, only a dozen or so stalls remain, quietly preserving this traditional craft. Among them, Master NG Kam-chun's shop "Pun Han Sin Koon" bears a particularly intriguing name. In ancient times, the literati who served the emperor were known as "idle men". Master NG humbly calls himself "half-idle (pun han)", yet his master craftsmanship is truly hidden amid the city’s bustle — the seal featured on the 2010 Standard Chartered Bank HK$100 banknote was carved by Master NG himself.

Inside his tiny street stall, Master NG must maintain laser-like visual focus on his carving while remaining alert to every sound around, listening to the radio and taking various customer requests. This unique sensory experience is precisely what the artist-mentor and mentees from last year's "SATA Summer School" sought to record and transform through electronic art and digital media. Their exchange brought a powerful realization: if the finished seal handed to the customer is the "positive space", then the stone fragments flying off during carving form the "negative space" — though seemingly useless, they are the very condition that allows the seal's image to come into being.

Drawing on small exercises from the "SATA Summer School", this workshop will guide participants in making "contact mics" and creating an "urban impression prints" zine*, capturing the silent sounds and objects that shape the rich textures of the city — much like the fragments left behind by carving, or that tiny stall by the roadside.

Guest: Master NG Kam-chun (Pun Han Sin Koon)

【SATA Satellite】Bio Art Workshop

Bio art might sound like the preserve of arcane scientific research, but in truth, humans live alongside microbial companions every day—our bodies are walking laboratories!

Last year’s Bio Art group from the SATA Summer School took the 88-year-old Kee Heung Chun Tea Company as its starting point. Led by the artist mentor, participants met third-generation successor Mr Derek LAM. Though seemingly ordinary, a single leaf‘s blending and roasting is an art of conversing with nature. Once consumed, it turns the body into a cross-species meeting ground.

This workshop will guide participants in making kombucha, starting from the fermentation process to learn how to co-create with microbes. Unlike hand-brewed tea, kombucha is transformed through the combined action of bacteria and yeast in a SCOBY. Serving as guest facilitator, artist Tian ZHANG will guide the kombucha-making process while sharing her creative journey.

Guest Facilitator: Tian ZHANG (artist, SATA Summer School artist mentee)
Special thanks: Kee Heung Chun Tea Company

📅 Date: 9 Aug 2026 (Sun)
🕛 Time: 2:30 PM–4:30 PM

⚠️Remarks
* The workshop will be conducted primarily in Putonghua, supplemented by Cantonese.
* The workshop includes all materials. After preparing their kombucha, participants will need to wait approximately 14 days for the fermentation process to complete.
* Kombucha contains trace amounts of alcohol, caffeine, and carbonation. Pregnant women, children, and individuals with chronic conditions or health sensitivities should consult a physician before consuming.

【SATA Satellite: Exhibition & Workshops】

As digital technology and AI rapidly take over daily life, will the traditional old shops tucked away in our streets and alleys fade into the tides of time? Or might art-tech offer fresh ways to reinterpret the stories of these community treasures, opening up new perspectives?

Last year, the “SATA Summer School” presented by SATA (Society Art Technology Asia) saw four artists and their mentees visit and study four long-standing shops in the Central and Western District. They explored through four artistic approaches: Bio Art, Sonic Art, Graphic Art, and Electronic Art, to unearth and reinterpret the wisdom and value of these shops through art.

The recently concluded SATA Fest exhibition, “Between the Between”, showcased various artists’ reflections on the relationship between humans and time. At SATA Satellite, artworks by four groups—inspired by traditional shops and created by mentors and mentees from the SATA Summer School—will once again be exhibited to the public!

【MaD Post 08 - MaD School has Graduated!】

What does an ideal community look like?

MaD always believes that everyone, adults and children alike, possesses the creativity and agency to intervene in public spaces, turning their community blueprints into reality! The recently concluded “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: MaD School 2025 – 2026 End of Term” witnessed how ordinary kaifongs rediscovered their imagination for spaces.

Since 2012, MaD School has been dedicated to connecting fellow changemakers from diverse backgrounds, turning the community into a classroom. This year, we have finally graduated! This ultimate End of Term exhibition was more than just a showcase of our achievements. Through interactive installations, games, and 20 off-site performances, it unleashed the changemaking energy across multiple neighbourhoods, including Tseung Kwan O, Shun Lee Estate, Ho Man Tin, and Shek Kip Mei.

Over the past three years, our community project Studio In-Situ has focused on TKO The first year emphasised observing the neighbourhood; the second year was dedicated to listening to kaifongs' stories; and in the final year, we encouraged everyone to initiate innovative actions, culminating in projects by eight adult groups and one secondary school group. Tseung Kwan O has long been positioned as a healthy city, but one group was concerned about its lack of cultural vitality. In response, they gathered participants from all three cohorts to co-run an experimental cultural space, TaKeOff organising nearly 40 cultural events in just three and a half months.

Before the new town expands further, another group led kaifongs out to the sea to explore the future boundaries of TKO. Meanwhile, upon noticing that the playground at the TKO Promenade was destroyed by a typhoon, another group decided not to wait passively. Instead, they proactively created fun road signs and a "Play Cart" filled with mini-games, inviting passers-by to play spontaneously. This unexpected surprise not only made children linger, but also moved parents as they saw a mundane path revitalised. One parent remarked, "I never thought this little path could be a place for games!" Without splurging resources, a little creativity can bring about changemaking possibilities to rigid spaces.

Spatial intervention is not just for adults! Through the “Community Explorers: The School of Play”, students from Wa Ying College carefully observed the surroundings of their campus and tailor-made four play installations for their peers, cleverly grafting them onto existing public facilities. Students from Shun Lee Catholic Secondary School also transformed into “Community Changemakers”, devising six themed actions for Shun Lee Estate to showcase the younger generation's care for their community. Furthermore, students from Concordia Lutheran School participating in “Community Explorers: Community Nature Quest” responded to the human-made pollution in Shek Kip Mei's urban forest with games they created themselves.

Looking back at the exhibition, the most touching aspect was the cross-regional connections forged among people. Although the exhibition was held in TKO, it attracted passionate individuals who travelled all the way from Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun. We were also fortunate to have in-depth exchanges with young friends from Tsing Yi, sharing valuable insights on community building.

MaD School has concluded, but we firmly believe that the power of changemaking will never cease. Graduation means that the seeds of innovation are now scattered everywhere—several groups are continuing their community experiments in mobile formats, while others have brought the nutrients gained here to other projects. The doors for collaboration at MaD are always open. We look forward to partnering with different organisations and schools to continue responding to community needs with creative ideas, co-creating a different landscape together!
