🎥 To mark Spanish Cinema Day, celebrated annually on 6 October, we are delighted to screen the Spanish documentary El Desencanto (1976), directed by Jaime Chávarri.

✨This is a collaboration between the Consulate General of Spain Consulate General of Spain in Hong Kong 西班牙駐港總領事館, AECID, ICAA, Instituto Cervantes and SpanishWorld HongKong, the only officially accredited Spanish academy in Hong Kong by Instituto Cervantes.

El Desencanto (1976)

🎞️El Desencanto, is a landmark Spanish documentary directed by Jaime Chávarri. The documentary functions less as a traditional biography and more as a raw, unsettling family autopsy. The film centers on the family of Leopoldo Panero, the official poet of Franco's regime, who died in 1962. Fourteen years later, his widow Felicidad Blanc and their three sons, sit before the camera to remember him. What begins as a tribute quickly unravels into a bitter, often cruel, reckoning with their shared past.

🎥 Don't miss this incredible movie, as it demonstrates that repressed truth demands an outlet, however sometimes painful.

🎬Detrás del Mito - Behind the Myth

On Monday, we had the pleasure of screening the film Detrás del Mito (2015), a fascinating case study on how visual storytelling can build (or distort) historical legacy.

A documentary that couldn’t come at a better time, as it coincides with the 201st anniversary of Uruguay’s independence, celebrated each year on August 25th.

🎥The film night proved to be a deeply enriching experience. Following the documentary, attendees engaged in a lively exchange of perspectives, opinions, and questions, fostering an open and welcoming space for dialogue. 🗣️✨

It’s that time of year again! 🍅 Over 20,000 people, more than 150,000 kilos of tomatoes, and one tiny Spanish town, Buñol (Valencia), of just 9,000 inhabitants painted completely red.

La Tomatina is pure, joyful chaos; and it all goes down in just one hour (from 12:00 to 13:00 sharp)! First held back in 1945, this festival has grown into a global phenomenon, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. And here's a fun fact: the tomatoes used are specially grown in Extremadura, chosen for being soft and squishy to avoid injuries, making it a food fight that's both safe and sustainable!

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook the Andean region of Ayacucho, Peru, this Thursday, causing minor damage to homes and, fortunately, no fatalities.

The movement occurred at 1:00 p.m. local time, with its epicenter 35 kilometers north of the town of Coracora, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

The quake comes after two powerful earthquakes occurred in the last two months, in Colombia and Venezuela, which left thousands of dead, injured, and extensive damage.

After 114 years, on August 12, 2026, Spain once again witnessed a total solar eclipse. 🌑☀️ This spectacular astronomical phenomenon could be observed across much of the Iberian Peninsula, where the moon completely covered the sun at its peak. 🌍🔭

But what's most astonishing is that Spain will experience something exceptional: three solar eclipses in just three years; this one on August 12, 2026; another total eclipse in 2027; and an annular one in 2028.
