🍦”Ice cream” or “Ice-cream”?

✅Ice cream
❌Ice-cream
But why?

There is simply no reason to use a hyphen when describing ice cream as a noun.

The delicious and frozen dessert that we all love, has been recorded to be known as both “iced cream” and “ice cream” in the 1600s. “Iced” here is used as an adjective, and is of similar usage to “iced tea” or “canned food”. However, “iced cream” is now considered an error.

Using a hyphen will form a compound adjective (an adj formed using 2 or more words), which will be grammatically incorrect when using the word as a noun.

Though rarely used, ice-cream (compound adj.) is actually a colour similar to that of vanilla ice cream (i.e. The ice-cream colour of sth.). Nowadays, this colour is most often described as cream (i.e. The cream colour of sth.).

The moral of the story is, stick to using “ice cream” when writing about the dessert. Ice-cream is an adjective describing a colour, while “iced cream” is considered to be an error.

FUN FACT: Ice cream was actually invented in China some time between 600-900AD. It was then brought to Italy by Marco Polo when he arrived home from China in the 1200s.
