【廖本懷博士及港式優雅來訪 Visit of Dr. Donald Liao and HK Class】

感謝大學堂第一任導師、首任華人政務司廖本懷博士及港式優雅 HK Class來訪大學堂！作為當年一手改建宿舍的設計師，廖先生將大學堂當年創建的故事娓娓道來，讓宿生們獲益良多。宿生會及舍堂歷史檔案組成員帶領廖先生與港式優雅參觀舍堂，展示不同舊物，講述近年人與事，廖先生亦分享了宿生初年的生活點滴，重溫青春好時光。

Thank you Dr. Donald Liao and Mr. Martin Fung from HK Class for visiting us today! As the architect behind the reconstruction of UHall, Dr. Liao shared with us stories around its inception. While the Student Association and the University Hall Archives Group led our guests around the hall, Dr. Liao talked about life in his bright young days at HKU, as an undergraduate, a hall tutor and an assistant lecturer.

Back to October 4, 1956, U-hallites convened the first Annual General Meeting. With the adoption of the Constitution, this band of young men established the University Hall Students' Association. The first session of the Executive Committee by then took office.

In the 65 years since its establishment, the University Hall has nurtured among U-hallites a pursuit of excellence and dedication to serve, a desire to bring positive change to the University, to our society, and to knowledge.

Gratifying spirits and simpler moments are certainly part of life in UHall. But far more important is the honing of intellect and aspirations. Through the best of times and darkest of hours, U-Hallites build bonds and brotherhood that last a lifetime.


The first Chairman of UHSA, Professor Yeoh Kian Hian wrote in a letter with another old boy Dr. Yau Wah Hon in October 2021,

“That you and your colleagues are still trying to keep alive the spirit of UH touches me. It was this spirit which I tried to foster and grow when so many of us students from different halls in 1956 chose to find new roots in this beautiful, historic monument.”

1956年10月4日，大學堂宿生召開第一次週年會議 (First Annual General Meeting)，通過憲章成立大學堂宿生會（University Hall Students’ Association），並於會上選出首屆宿生會幹事。

成立至今六十五載，大學堂一直培養宿生追求進步的心態與服務社會的精神，期望為香港大學、身處的社會，以至學術帶來貢獻。

舍堂的生活固然有輕鬆歡樂的時光，但大學堂更講求宿生並肩鍛鍊意志和訓練思維辯材，砥礪同行。甘苦與共的生活讓大學堂宿生建立畢生難忘的兄弟情。

第一屆大學堂宿生會主席 Professor Yeoh Kian Hian 於2021年10月與舊生游華漢醫生的書信中寫道：

“That you and your colleagues are still trying to keep alive the spirit of UH touches me. It was this spirit which I tried to foster and grow when so many of us students from different halls in 1956 chose to find new roots in this beautiful, historic monument.”

「 齊人未？」

今年喺小組賽入面戰勝孫志新堂同太古堂，五年嚟第一次以小組首名出線；更喺八強一雪前恥，以3:0擊敗利瑪竇宿舍殺入四強，一洗頹氣。

大學堂辯論隊，有浮、有沉，亦閃爍過唔少明星。我從來唔係一個善於辯論嘅人，亦唔覺得自己有能力勝任隊長一職，繼續做可能只係嚟自責任。

但呢三年嚟，見到隊員不論新舊，都搵到自己嘅位置，有啲企係台下可以問到台上口啞啞，有啲默默坐係電腦前面可以理順辯題嘅背景同爭議。所有人都好用心準備每一條辯題，每日prep de個時間由一開始10-2去到最尾一場差唔多8-4咁，明明好忙好多嘢做都好願意抽時間出嚟。呢種可能淨係喺Uhall先有嘅精神，亦都比咗我好大嘅動力去繼續打落去。

今年係我最後一年參加interhall。「係呢場第三名戰入面輸贏固然重要，但係我更想一位堂友可以到場見證，佢係以前嘅隊長，更係我打辯論嘅理由。」
