muke (向け) = made for someone / targeted at
muki (向き) = suitable for someone / fits well
yō (用) = exclusive use / only for
Even if the target is the same (N2 learners), the nuance changes:
“N2 learners muke” → created for them
“N2 learners muki” → suitable for them
“N2 learners yō” → only they can use it

Two ways to say “that time” in Japanese
Ano toki = a shared memory, something both people remember.
Sono toki = a specific moment in a story or explanation, even if the listener doesn’t know it.
Think of ano toki as “Remember when…?” and sono toki as “At that exact moment…”

日本語学習者のための日本文学の音読

人間失格 太宰治

No Longer Human
Osamu Dazai
"I have seen three photographs of that man.
The first is, one might say, from his childhood—he appears to be around ten years old. In the picture, the boy is surrounded by many women (presumably his elder sisters, younger sisters, and cousins), standing by the edge of a garden pond. He is wearing a coarse striped hakama, tilting his head about thirty degrees to the left, and smiling in an ugly manner."

Unpacking Japanese words for “discomfort”

Japanese has several ways to express feeling unwell or uneasy, but each carries a different nuance:
キモイ (kimoi) → Casual slang, used among friends. Instant dislike toward someone’s look or behavior.
気持ち悪い (kimochi warui) → Standard and versatile. Covers physical sickness, sensory discomfort, or psychological unease. Can be used in both casual and formal contexts.
気分が悪い (kibun ga warui) → More formal. Describes ongoing physical illness or emotional distress. Often used when explaining reasons to teachers, bosses, or in polite situations.

Key difference:
キモイ → Casual, momentary disgust
気持ち悪い → Broad coverage, momentary discomfort
気分が悪い → Formal, continuous illness or emotional discomfort

Both shinyō (信用) and shinrai (信頼) mean “to believe in someone,” but they carry different nuances:

• 信用 (shinyō) = trust based on past achievements, objective evaluation
• 信頼 (shinrai) = trust based on character and future expectations, subjective feeling

Example with a boss and employee:

• “I信用 her” = I trust her because of her past results.
• “I信頼 her” = I trust her because I believe in her character and future ability.

💡Think of it this way: 信用 = past / 信頼 = future.

“Katakana + i” adjectives in Japanese slang
Words like yabai, kimoi, dasai are made by adding “-i” to katakana.
They break grammar rules but sound catchy and light.
Features
Normally foreign words become na-adjectives (e.g. “creative da”).
Youth slang ignores this and forces them into i-adjectives.
Katakana makes them look pop and casual, easy to remember.
Recent slang
Meroi → from meromero, being crazy about your idol, super attractive or cute.
Example: “That visual today is really meroi!”
Emoi → emotional, nostalgic, touching.
Example: “These lyrics are so emoi.”
Kitsui (youth usage) → embarrassing, painful to watch.
Example: “That presentation was kitsui…”
Older but still alive
Guroi → grotesque, disturbing.
Example: “This video is too guroi to watch.”
Sekoi → stingy, petty.
Example: “Splitting the bill on a date? That’s sekoi.”
Uzai → annoying, troublesome.
Example: “These flies are so uzai.”
Established words
Yabai → dangerous / awesome.
Kimoi → gross, creepy.
Dasai → uncool, tacky.
Started as youth slang, now widely used by adults.
Shows how slang can become standard.
Cultural point
Japanese is flexible in creating new words.
Katakana adds lightness and emphasis.
Some slang disappears quickly, others gain citizenship as standard vocabulary.
Summary
Recent: meroi, emoi, kitsui
Old but alive: guroi, sekoi, uzai
Established: yabai, kimoi, dasai
It’s good to know these words you see on SNS,
but be careful when you use them!
