[2018 SSCDC]
To give valuable competition experience to our numerous juniors and new recruits, we entered the inaugural St Stephen's College Debating Competition, a tournament created for primary and junior secondary debaters. We have sent two junior secondary teams and a primary team consisting of year 6 novices, with each team producing a respectable run.
In particular, the Y6 team stood out in the primary division. They initially ranked 4th by winning 2 out of 3 preliminary rounds, but was promoted to the Grand Final due to disqualifications of other teams. The team seized the opportunity to become champions of the Primary Division after edging out RCHK on a 3-2 split in the final, with Hannah Leung the best speaker of the final. She was also the 7th overall best speaker, with Cheyenne So and Remie Cheung taking 3rd and 10th respectively to round out a successful campaign.
Despite missing out on the finals, our two secondary teams also put up a good fight, both taking two out of three preliminary rounds. Eugenia Lee was the 2nd best speaker, and Charmaine Ng was 5th best. Most importantly, all of our debaters gained beneficial exposure to the inter-school circuit and performed admirably in what was the first secondary-level competition for many. We hope the juniors can build on their initial successes and become better debaters in the future.

Our English debate team has been joining the annual Hong kong British Parliamentary Debate Competition for the past 4 years and every year we leave with amazing results. Through enduring 7 stressful debate rounds, CKY 1 (Cherry Law and Anna Kam) broke into the quarter finals in ninth place! Although CKY 2 (Ada Kam and Katrina Ng) did not break into the quarterfinals and CKY 1 was not able to break into the finals, they still gave a lot of effort and took a lot out of joining the competition. Our previous captain, Marco Law, got into the finals once again for the third consecutive year, teaming up with a fellow debater from Renaissance College Hong Kong. All in all, congratulations to all of the CKY debaters who participated in the competition during the past three days and we all recognise these to be great achievements for CKY! Let’s hope we can emerge next year with even better results!

[a slightly belated post]
As another academic year has come and gone, we must sadly say farewell again to another cohort of CKY English debaters.
With a proper send off with our annual "end of year dinner", we bid farewell to our two 2015-16 co-captains, Ivan and May, who cruised strongly as our leaders this year, as well as our committed, supportive and forever reliable Eunice, Leo, Maggie and Jerry.
Best of luck at uni ❤

Congratulations to our Junior Debate Team in their performance today as they concluded the Jr HKSDPSC Debate Tournament at Good Hope School as Champions. Combined with their preliminary rounds from two weeks ago, they won all eight rounds - a new record set by our EDT. In the Grand Final, they competed against German Swiss International School on the motion "This house would not prosecute thefts by the poor" and narrowly beat them by demonstrating that letting the poor off the legal hook won't solve poverty and only perpetuates more crime in the long run. An excellent achievement this year as we continue to establish ourselves as a school with a strong debate culture, but we still have a long way to go so don't ever lose sight of the bigger picture: individual growth coupled with team unity.

Congratulations to our debaters in the junior division, who won ALL FIVE rounds of debates today in the 13th HKSDPSC tournament today! We came 3rd overall, after GSIS (1st) and RCHK (2nd) who also won all five of their rounds, but held higher individual speaker scores. An excellent achievement nonetheless by our juniors, as this will mark the first time we won all five rounds.
Next up, we will compete against St Paul's Co-ed College in the Quarter Finals in two weeks time. Best of luck (with lots of prep) to our junior debaters!!!

Congratulations to Kelvin Ho & Clement Ho who tied first with DGS on 8 team points and 462 team speaker points in yesterday's International Competition for Young Debaters. The competition drew in 26 teams from local and international teams alike for a 3-round selection trial in British Parliamentary debate style. Alongside the team from DGS, Kelvin and Clement have been invited to compete against other top teams from around the world at Oxford University in late April.
