"Rather than treating disease downstream, why not prevent it upstream?"

Prof William Wong, Head of HKUMed's Department of Family Medicine & Primary Care, shares the case for prevention-first care — noting that, by one modelling estimate, improving lifestyle alone could in theory avert up to half of premature deaths.

His seven everyday lines of defence:

💉 Vaccination — the most direct, efficient tool
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family planning
🦠 Sexual health — treating silent infections early to protect fertility
🧠 Mental wellbeing — seeking help when stress disrupts daily life
🚭 Quitting smoking & alcohol — major drivers of heart disease and cancer
🩺 Smart screening — targeted and cost-effective (e.g. colorectal cancer), mindful of over-screening
🦷 Dental health — the foundation of eating and sleeping well

Real health management starts with everyday prevention.

【Celebrating Our Teaching Community, Sharing Knowledge】

On 12 September 2026, the HKU Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care held its Annual Family Medicine Teachers Meeting, thanking our community teachers for nurturing medical students and honouring our long-serving teachers.

Our external examiner Professor Claire Stewart, Dean and Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham and a practising GP, explored how to assess professionalism fairly in a changing world.

Dr Linda Chan, Dr Emily Tse and Dr David Wong shared updates on students’ learning experiences at HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, the role of District Health Centres in primary healthcare education, and EM-Power, which supports ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong through clinical care and primary care research.

Dr April Luo shared her team’s findings published in JAMA Internal Medicine: comparing siblings born to the same mother, the study found no association between paracetamol use during pregnancy and an increased risk of autism or ADHD in children.
Thank you to all our teachers for their continued dedication, and to our speakers for their valuable contributions!

• 追蹤轉介、輪候及診斷延誤;
• 在伙伴醫院驗證風險工具;

We are pleased to share that RAISE Liver Triage, led by Prof. Jiandong Zhou, has received Hong Kong RGC Early Career Scheme funding.

Liver disease can remain silent in adults with diabetes. In Hong Kong, around 73% have fatty liver and 18% have liver fibrosis, yet timely assessment is often missed.

RAISE will use routine diabetes visits to bring liver-risk assessment closer to patients.

Using existing electronic health records, it will identify who should be prioritised for ultrasound, FibroScan® or biomarker testing, track delays and check whether access is fair.

Simply put: the right patient, the right liver check, at the right time.

We hope to support earlier detection, shorter delays and fairer primary care.

Collaboration enquiries: Professor Jiandong Zhou, [email protected].

🤖 AI in Primary Care? HKU Team Breaks Down the Evidence

A new study led by Prof. Edmond Chow from HKU's Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and MIT, was just published in Communications Medicine. It looks at how large language models (like ChatGPT, Claude) can be used safely in primary care settings.

🔍 What works right now? – Best use is "assisting with the paperwork"

✅ Drafting patient replies, summarising clinical notes, improving doctor-patient communication
✅ Saves time, both doctors and patients report good experiences
✅ But improvements are mainly in workflow efficiency – no solid evidence yet that they directly boost diagnostic accuracy or treatment outcomes

⚠️ Limitations & risks – Don't treat it as a "virtual GP" just yet

❌ Evidence for supporting diagnosis, treatment decisions, or patient outcomes is still very limited
❌ Most studies are still in simulated settings – real-world clinics bring many unknowns
❌ Population health and cost-effectiveness? Still at the "hypothesis" stage – waiting for prospective trials

🔒 Safety first – Four guardrails are essential

🛡️ Privacy, data security, algorithm transparency, and model reliability
🛡️ Current advice: start with high‑volume, low‑risk tasks like documentation and messaging
🛡️ Final decisions and accountability must stay with doctors – AI is only an assistant

💡 Bottom line

AI in primary care has promise, but no rush. Use it for administrative grunt work first, build solid governance and fairness mechanisms, then expand slowly. Doctor in charge, patient at ease – that's the right way forward.

📌 Study by HKU, MGH, and MIT, published in Communications Medicine.

☀️🥵 Hong Kong is baking under extreme heat! The Department of Health is urging everyone—especially parents and the elderly—to stay safe. Heat stroke isn't just about feeling dizzy; it can be life-threatening. With over 200 hospital cases a year, we need to take this seriously.

Keep your family safe:
💧 Drink water constantly (skip the coffee and alcohol for now!)
👕 Wear light, loose, and light-coloured clothes
🚗 NEVER leave kids or elders in a parked car
🏠 Keep indoor air flowing—use fans or AC

If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or confused, stop and get help immediately. Let’s protect the ones we love during this heatwave! ❤️

Finishing cancer treatment is a milestone — but the health journey continues, and the years after treatment are often longer than treatment itself.

Health after cancer spans five areas: watching for recurrence and new cancers · physical late effects · emotions and mind · chronic conditions and heart health · prevention through vaccines and medication safety.

Oncology looks deep; family medicine looks wide. Not one replacing the other — one care team around you, with your family doctor connecting the whole picture.

Cancer survivorship goes beyond follow-up. Walk on with your family doctor.
