ILS Approaches

The ILS system consists of several key components, providing guidance through ground-based localizer and glide slope transmitters. To help determine your position relative to the runway, the ILS may also offer Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) fixes or marker beacons along the approach path. Here’s a breakdown of each component:

Localizer:
The localizer guides your alignment with the runway centerline. When using a VOR indicator, normal sensing occurs on the front course, while reverse sensing occurs on the back course. By using a Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) and setting the front course under the course index, you can avoid reverse sensing, regardless of whether you are inbound or outbound on either course.

Glide Slope:
The glide slope provides vertical guidance on the final approach. Your required rate of descent primarily depends on your groundspeed—at a consistent glide slope angle (usually 3°), you will need a steeper descent at higher groundspeeds and a gentler descent at lower speeds. If you maintain the glide slope, you should reach the decision height near the middle marker, though the charted Minimum Altitude Point (MAP) may vary. During the intermediate approach phase, your aircraft will typically be below the glide slope, showing full upward needle deflection on the glide slope indicator, which you must adjust to intercept the correct centerline.

Bringing It All Together:
During an ILS approach, you track the intersection of the glide slope and localizer courses, ensuring you follow the correct path toward the runway.
