Hidden Space

The past development of Hong Kong didn’t prioritize the development of public open space (POS) so the POS per person in HK is 2.5 sqm and far from the minimum POS per person suggested by WHO (9 sqm). Some sub-districts like Wan Chai even have an extremely low POS per person (0.7 sqm). So, my final year project aims at finding potential spots for pocket park development and redesigning some existing pocket parks to improve the living environment for Wan Chai citizens and improve the cityscape of Wan Chai by providing more pocket parks and greenery.

Return to Basics - Big Wave Bay Glamping

The concept is to create a healing landscape in Hong Kong, to promote the idea of a slow life, and to offer a new and unique style of accommodation for locals. Getting close to a blue space has been proved to be the most effective way to de-stress and to promote one's well-being. Therefore, beaches are the target site to build such landscapes. The reasons to choose Big Wave Bay as the site, is because of its unique location and the connection between people and waves. Big Wave Bay is located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island, next to Shek O.

The beach is surrounded by 3 mountains, providing a sense of security and comfort, which none of the other beaches in Hong Kong could create. Although it is close to urban districts like Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan, when you enter the beach, it is like cutting off the rest of the world. This sense of isolation helps to facilitate the healing orocess.

New Bond in the Water

Shing Mun River is the pivot of Sha Tin District. The water experienced ecological degradation after reclamation of sea area for developing Sha Tin new town in the 70s and 80s and channelization. As the new town developed, the agricultural history of Sha Tin also faded. The aims of this project are to bring the wildlife back to the once flourished water body, recall the history related to water in Sha Tin District and promote a water friendly culture. Islands and wetland habitats are created along the river to serve wildlife and human, forming networks of open spaces and ecosystems.

HealLAND - Therapeutic Landscape Links to Chinese Medical Hospital

This project is a large-scale therapeutic landscape designed on a partly restored landfill adjacent to the upcoming Tseung Kwan O Chinese Medicine Hospital. The design combines the characteristics of “Five Elements” and integrates the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine.

The site provides spaces including planting, sensory experience, meditation, contemplation, exercise areas of different intensities. These spaces allow patients to relax and release negative emotions during illness treatment. As prevention is better than cure, there is a tea pavilion to promote the knowledge of diet therapy and tea to raise the public's awareness of disease prevention through healthy eating.

The Memory Lane: Reveal Hidden Histories in Wan Chai

Wan Chai is one of Hong Kong's earliest settlements and has an interesting heritage, possessing many fine historic buildings from different periods. At the early stage of colonial governance, the district was once the home of high-class residences for rich Europeans and foreign merchants and shipyards were built along the shores of Wan Chai Bay. The rapid trading had provided a lot of jobs and had attracted the locals to live and settle nearby, and the Street Market located at Tai Yuen Street and Cross Street had been developed to support their daily living for decades.

Today’s inner Wan Chai is a mixture of the new and the old, commercials and residentials, you could find Grade A office buildings, at the same time pre-war tenant houses in the area; with complex demography, extremely multi-functions; the Street Market had witnessed the rapid transformation of the area, it still embedded a lot of local characters, representing the down to earth local’s life. This project aims to develop an urban typology which could reveal the rich cultural contexts in the area and the local street market, at the same time integrating today’s vibrant city life of Wan Chai.
