Research shows that phonics, when taught correctly, is one of the best ways of teaching children to learn to read. It develops a child’s reading fluency, builds their patience and concentration, broadens their grasp of vocabulary and lays a proper foundation for the success of a child. A good phonics education is not merely one that raises phonemic awareness but should be one that encompasses a co
mplete, well-rounded reading program. It should encourage learners to read, as well as provide children ample opportunities for extensive reading and creative writing. Our synthetic approach to phonics is a method of teaching where words are broken up into the smallest units of sounds. Children are taught how to identify different sounds, how to blend them together to read and at the same time, how to break up words in order to be able to spell correctly. As long time phonics teachers ourselves, we have used and observed many different phonic programs available on the market and ours is one that is designed particularly with the strengths and weaknesses of an English as a second language student in mind. Our phonics program includes:
• Simple and systematic introduction to different letter sounds
• Supplementary exercise which helps solidify the learning of sounds
• Varied practice to apply learnt skills
• Integrated approach to connecting reading to writing
• Rules and patterns of English spelling taught to ensure greater success in both reading and spelling
