The British Empire Exhibition was held in London in 1924 and 1925. Hong Kong took part, with its own exhibition area - the Hong Kong Section - which was the only comprehensive showcase of Hong Kong to take place in Britain during the colonial era.
Part 1 of this exhibition introduced the basic facts of the Hong Kong Section and evaluated the (mis)representation of Hong Kongโ€™s Chinese communities in the British Empire Exhibition. Part 2 will further evaluate the Hong Kong Pavilionโ€™s architectural design and the involvements of British and European communities in the Section. It will display more items about the Hong Kong Section, as well as other sections of the British Empire Exhibition.
Details of the Exhibition:
Date: 9 February 2022 โ€“ 11 March 2022
Venue: Exhibition Area, Ingenium, 2/F Main Library, The University of Hong Kong (HKU)

China through Western Eyes: 16th and 17th Century Titles from The University of Hong Kong Libraries Online Exhibition.

The Librariesโ€™ collection of western rare books comprises over 11,700 volumes including the Morrison Collection and the China section of the Hankow Club Library. The strength of the collection lies principally in its titles on China and the Far East and includes many accounts of early travellers to Peking, particularly those of the Jesuit missionaries who held a privileged position at the Emperorโ€™s Court long before other Europeans were able to reside in China.

The online exhibition offers a first-hand glimpse of the rare books originally authored by a number of Jesuit missionaries and those of other Catholic orders, as well as by explorers, scholars and merchants, including works by Alvaro Semedo (1585โ€“1658), Athanasius Kircher (1602โ€“1680), Martino Martini (1614โ€“1661), and Johannes Nieuhof (1618โ€“1672). Through these rare titles, you are invited to travel back in time to appreciate how China was once perceived and understood by westerners during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The online booklet is available at:
