How do you say "cross-kick" in Argentina? 🇦🇷⚽

Rabona (rah-BOH-nah).

The move? Cross one leg behind the other to kick. Flashy. Deceptive. Pure Argentina.

Origin: In 1948, Ricardo Infante pulled it off. Magazine El Gráfico joked: "El infante que se hizo la rabona" — "The kid who played hooky." The name stuck.

Then Maradona brought it to Barcelona in 1982. The rest is history.

Fun fact: Argentinians speak Rioplatense Spanish — they use "vos" instead of "tú," and pronounce "ll" like "sh." Listen for it!

In Brazil, you don't just nutmeg someone.
You sign your name on them.

The word is Caneta (kah-NEH-tah).
Literally? "Pen."

Football meaning? Nutmeg — kicking the ball through an opponent's legs.

Why "pen"? Because in Brazilian street football, that move is your signature. You're writing your name on the defender. It's cheeky. It's disrespectful. And in Brazil? It's celebrated.

And then there's the goal celebration:
When a Brazilian scores something truly special, they don't just call it a goal. They call it Golaço de placa — "a goal worthy of a plaque."

Brazil doesn't just score. They create art.

The Brazilian way of life:
Football in Brazil isn't a sport. It's a dance. It's rhythm. It's ginga — that sway, that fake, that body movement that makes their style so impossible to defend against.
They call it Joga Bonito — The Beautiful Game.

How do you say "hat-trick" in French? 🇫🇷⚽

It's Coup du chapeau (koo doo shah-poh).
Literally? "Stroke of the hat."

But where does "hat trick" actually come from? The real story: Cricket. England. 1858.

Bowlers would collect money in a hat when they took three wickets in three straight deliveries. They got a "hat trick" — a phrase that later crossed over to football, hockey, and baseball.

France simply translated it beautifully: Coup du chapeau.

And then there's the chant: Allez les Bleus!
It means "Go the Blues!" — but here's the real history:

In 1976, the French club Saint-Étienne (wearing green) made an incredible European Cup run. Their fans chanted "Allez les Verts!" (Go the Greens!) — and a song by that name became a massive hit.

A French sports journalist named Jacques Ferran saw this and thought: why not adapt it for the national team?

On 17 November 1976, a match report first called the French team "Les Bleus" in print. Two years later, for the 1978 World Cup, the official song "Allez les Bleus!" was born.

Today, it's still the first thing you hear when France scores. Every stadium. Every match. Every fan.
