🌐Global Declaration Against Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity/Expression (SOGIE) Conversion Practices

Following two years of global collaboration among international psychological associations, the International Psychology Network for Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Issues (IPsyNet) has officially published its evidence-informed Global Declaration Against Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity/Expression (SOGIE) Conversion Practices.

The Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS) is proud to stand alongside leading professional bodies worldwide in endorsing this declaration, reaffirming our commitment to scientifically informed practice, professional ethics, and human rights.

Decades of psychological science demonstrate that SOGIE conversion practices:

❌ Constitute human rights abuses and may amount to forms of violence or torture.
❌ Inflict severe harm and trauma, increasing the risks of depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and suicidality.
❌ Perpetuate discrimination through societal, cultural, and religious stigma.
❌ Lack scientific validity and grounding in authoritative scholarly theory.
❌ Violate ethical principles and international professional codes of practice.
🚫 Contradict affirmative care, which emphasizes acceptance, support, and empowerment.

As an endorsing body, HKPS remains dedicated to protecting the mental health, well-being, and dignity of all individuals.

【Bridging Academia & Practice | HKPS Actively Engages in Key Regional & International Events】

At The Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS), we are committed to driving professional growth and staying at the forefront of academic and social innovation. We were recently honored to participate as a supporting organization in several major international and local inter-collegiate conferences. Alongside global experts, we explored pressing social issues and exchanged academic insights—bridging psychological theory with real-world practice to foster continuous research and innovation! ✨

Event Recap:

1️⃣ Asian Professional Negotiators Network Conference 🤝
Marking its debut in Hong Kong, this forum broke new ground by connecting two vital topics: "crisis negotiation" and "mental health." As a proud supporting organization, HKPS connected deeply with government officials, leading scholars, mental health professionals, and law enforcement leaders from across Asia to champion professional collaboration in crisis intervention and mental well-being.

2️⃣ Hong Kong Shue Yan University — International Conference on Human Resilience: Navigating Life Changes & Challenges (HRCONF2026) 🌐
Our representatives were invited to the opening ceremony of this insightful conference. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the event delved into human resilience, life changes, and challenges. By engaging with global scholars, the Society continues to strengthen its footprint in international psychological research, bringing fresh academic insights to the challenges of modern societal change.

3️⃣ Saint Francis University — Cross-Regional Higher Education "Cyber Youth" Thematic Sharing💻
Our society representatives conducted a voluntary sharing session via Zoom for psychology students from universities across Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. The session delved into pressing mental health topics, exploring how excessive social media use affects youth psychological well-being and highlighting Hong Kong’s support networks. This initiative successfully translated academic theory into practical solutions for modern digital challenges, helping to cultivate the region's next generation of professionals.

A big thank you to all the inviting universities and organizations! We look forward to deepening our cross-sector collaborations and leveraging scientific research and practical expertise to elevate the field of psychology in Hong Kong.
