A few weeks ago the girls took their inventions to the the final presentations of the 2023 SINGAPORE INVENTION CONVENTION! We finally saw the end of the light after WEEKS of working on their prototypes, pitches and presentations. PHEW!

We are ALMOST ready for game sessions! We have waited a little more than a year since moving so I’m SO excited for the next season of Gameschooling! I’ve had so many idea how we could use our space to meet and make new gamers. 😆

We played Corners with Cents for math today as a fun review of the Money topic. It is similarly to Dominoes, but matching combinations of numbers to make multiples of 5’s instead and points are calculated by adding on.

Today’s Corners counted as cents; a 8 and 7 pair would make $0.15. And, as an added incentive, I told her, I would give her the total amount of money she ”makes” in this game. I am poorer $1.45 but what a great investment for less than a cup of latte.

Andy's been wanting to play word games lately. So we all took a crack at Origame's recent release: ALPHABEAST ATTACK!

The one thing I've always appreciated with Origame titles is synchronized play. It is almost essential when playing with little ones because they have very little patience for downtime.

It's very quick game. Alphabeast cards are dealt and we immediately start planning our defense. That is, each player creating a word that contains as many of the Alphabeast letters attacking them (3 to a player) and those attacking the group in the center (one for each player). Any letters left unused means the Alphabeasts Attack!

Alphabeast Attack is a cooperative effort for all players to help and protect everyone against the Alphabeasts. So there is opportunity to help with suggestions if players are stuck. It's outstanding because in most word games, adults simply have the upper hand. This way, that advantage is to the groups benefit and the kids LOVED it that WE defeated them in a joint effort.

We're taking a figurative trip to Penang! Kaki Lima refers to the five-foot ways of shophouses built in the British Colonial era. There are a few places in the region that have them; Penang, Malacca and Singapore. And these have been a topic of our discussion in our homeschool social studies when we read about Singapore's history. Kaki Lima's reference to these passageways are particular to Penang (and similar to Malacca). So, it nice to draw the similarities between them. Definitely brings to life a little bit of the region's history.
