"When I signed up for Lead for Life, I had no idea what I was walking into. I knew it was a two-year leadership course. That was about it. So when I showed up to the Orientation Weekend Launch, half-awake, Lead for Life t-shirt in hand, I genuinely did not know what to expect. I walked in a bit guarded. I've done my fair share of leadership talks and team-building sessions, and I had the usual scepticism that comes with having sat through a few too many that felt like they could have been a two-page email. I was expecting to be told things I already knew. But there was something about the way the facilitators engaged with us that made me actually pay attention. Not performative attention, actual attention. By lunch I'd stopped checking my phone. The ideas from that day have genuinely stuck with me. A life changing experience, indeed!"

“Lead for Life completely changed how I think about leadership, not as being the loudest voice in the room, but as making people feel safe enough to actually speak up. 🫶 My mentors taught me that real leadership starts with listening. Their support made HKU feel like home when I needed it most. Grateful for this community, and excited for what's next! ✨

"The mentors here are not your typical professors — they’re genuinely fun, energetic, and full of personality. Coming into university, I expected lectures, tutorials, and the usual serious faces at the front of the room. But the mentors in this program? Completely different. They’re vibrant, humorous, and nothing like the stiff academic style you may see in other courses. What really stands out is their ability to communicate — they have this incredible gift for making every conversation engaging, thought-provoking, and genuinely enjoyable. If you want to sharpen your social and communication skills, this is the place to be!"

"I’ve always found it easier to believe in other people than in myself. I’d cheer my friends on to take leaps I would hesitate to take, without realizing the double standard I was holding myself to. My mentor group at Lead for Life helped me notice that, and now I try treating myself the way I'd treat a friend. In a way, I used to chase being efficient. But if AI keeps getting better at doing things faster, I'd rather be the kind of leader AI can't be."

“What made this journey truly special was the people I met along the way. I have connected with like-minded peers who share similar values and aspirations, and whose perspectives have challenged and enriched my own. I have been fortunate to have mentors who genuinely care not just about our growth in the programme, but about our lives beyond it. Whether it is advice on academics, internships, career paths, or simply navigating university life, they have been there to offer guidance and encouragement every step of the way.”

In an AI-driven age, Lead for Life reveals a unique perspective of character building and achieves this through interpersonal connections. The group outings offer a peaceful escape from academic pressure, the character lessons imparted from mentors make us reflect on our life pathways, and the lively conversations with groupmates help us learn different mindsets of peers from various cultures. With these in effect, I’ve gained a deeper vision of life, empathy and inclusiveness.
