[The Martial Club Team: Sifu Michael Chan]

Sifu Michael Chan (), teacher of Wing Chun and Krav Maga at the Kwai Fong Martial Club (.club.hong.kong), was born in the English City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. In the early 1990s, he relocated to London. A gifted musician, he was guitarist for several British Rock bands. In 1995, he discovered Wing Chun, the Chinese martial art that was to become his lifelong passion.

Sifu Chan’s first teacher was Sifu Kevin Chan, who ran the Kamon Martial Art Federation and schools in London’s Covent Garden, Croydon and Portsmouth. Sifu Chan was dedicated to the extent he trained at all three schools. To this day, he greatly appreciates Sifu Kevin Chan’s tutelage.

Eventually, Sifu Chan’s main teacher became Sifu Joseph Lee, a student of the late Grandmaster Lee Shing; who was in turn a student of Grandmaster Ip Man 葉問, and Ip’s senior students Grandmasters Lok Yiu 駱耀 and Jiu Wan 招允. Sifu Chan and Sifu Lee bonded swiftly when they realised they were both of Hakka stock from Sai Kung, Hong Kong.

Altogether, Sifu Chan studied under Sifu Lee for 10 years before becoming his sworn disciple in 2018. It was then that Sifu Chan performed Bai See 拜師, the traditional ceremony that marks the formal acceptance of a student into the teacher’s tradition. Prior to that, Sifu Chan had also been a Wing Chun instructor in his own right, initially under the auspices of Sifu Kevin Chan’s Kamon Martial Arts Federation, and later under the Joseph Lee International Wing Chun Association.

Alongside his study of Wing Chun, Sifu Chan also trained in the Israeli martial art of Krav Maga with Instructor Paul Buddles-Smith in the English town of Hayes in Kent. After 8 years of training, Sifu Chan became a qualified instructor of Urban Krav Maga under the British Combat Association.

In December 2020, Sifu Chan relocated to Hong Kong, and has since continued to teach both Wing Chun and Krav Maga under the banner of the Martial Club. Presently, he teaches both group and private classes, and occasionally conducts Zoom Webinars on preparedness against confrontations in an urban environment.
