We often hear people say, “if you don’t get enough sleep, you can catch up later.” But have you heard of “Sleep Banking”?

Sleep Banking means having more sleep in advance so that your body can draw on those reserves from the bank during periods when you are deprived of sleep.

In a U.S. study, soldiers were divided into two groups. One group slept 7 hours a night, while the other slept 10 hours. Afterwards, everyone was allowed to sleep for 3 hours in other nights. Those who had banked extra sleep hours showed a smaller drop in alertness and focus and recovered faster.

Since then, many sailors and professional athletes have adopted this strategy to help their bodies prepare for periods of insufficient sleep.

A neurology professor explains that our brains and bodies accumulate metabolic waste every day, and sleep is the key time for the brain to clear this waste. In this sense, sleep banking gives the brain extra time to perform this “clean-up” process while also replenishing its energy reserves.

So, if you know you'll be staying up late to meet a deadline, try getting some extra sleep beforehand! 😴💤

【 】“Let Working Caregivers Be Seen” – Want to improve workplace culture? But do you know what the boss really thinks?

In our previous post, we explored the “Motherhood Penalty” faced by working mothers. To improve family-friendly workplace policies, we may have heard many stories from employees, but what do employers actually think?

Prof. DAI Haijing shifted the research perspective from employees to employers this time. The study identified four core rationales influencing employers’ decision-making: “Market Meritocracy,” “Family Moral Virtuocracy,” “The Traditional View of Gendered Division of Labor,” and “Structural Resources and Constraints.” These four rationales coexist and intertwine, causing caregiver penalties and rewards to take on sharply different forms in different workplaces.

Prof. DAI recommends that the government should support employers through service-based policies, helping dual-income parents address the pressing childcare needs during summer holidays and similar periods. At the same time, society needs to strengthen public education on gender mainstreaming and actively encourage men to participate in family caregiving. Looking further ahead, she proposes advancing the concept of a “Care Bank”, transforming caregiving responsibilities from a private burden borne by families and women into a public and universal responsibility.

Want to build a workplace culture that truly supports caregivers? Start by understanding how employers think!

Working mothers juggle career and family every day, but this identity might become a burden in the workplace? Prof. DAI Haijing’s new book reveals a unique co-existence of “Motherhood Penalty” and “Fatherhood Premium” in Hong Kong workplaces.

The research found that Hong Kong employers acknowledged working mothers’ capabilities and sense of responsibility yet avoided assigning them business trips and challenging job tasks, due to concern that childcare responsibilities would prevent mothers from managing such demands. At the same time, male employees who take on family caregiving responsibilities were viewed as more responsible and were even offered better job opportunities and prospects of promotion.

As gender issues in the workplace continue to evolve, caregiving responsibilities may affect the career prospects of not only parents but also filial sons and daughters, forming a broader “Caregiver Penalty” phenomenon. Therefore, Prof. DAI believes that advocating for caregivers' rights is not only about women and mothers, it is about the labor rights of all workers.

Prof. DAI Haijing, Chairperson and Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Science at CUHK, has dedicated years to researching family-friendly workplace policies. Her new book interviewed more than 700 employers in Hong Kong and Shenzhen and revealed the unique co-existence of “Motherhood Penalty” and “Fatherhood Premium” in Hong Kong workplaces.

The research shifted the perspective from employees to employers, exploring how employers perceive work, family caregiving responsibilities, and policy regulations. It identified four core rationales influencing employers’ decision-making: “Market Meritocracy,” “Family Moral Virtuocracy,” “The Traditional View of Gendered Division of Labor,” and “Structural Resources and Constraints.”

Prof. DAI said, “To truly improve family-friendly workplace policies, we must first understand how employers think, so that we can address the root cause. If employers are seen only as subjects to be regulated, policies are often difficult to put into practice.”

Situationship ➡️➡️

Psychologist Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love says a complete and fulfilling relationship can be understood through his three key elements: Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment.

Gen Z’s popular trend of “Situationship” often includes only Intimacy and Passion, and misses the most crucial element — Commitment. Psychologists point out that without commitment; the relationship is hard to be developed into a stable and long-term partnership.

Research also states that a lack of commitment could make people feel insecure. Over time, this might trigger our brain’s “threat system”, making people more prone to anxiety and being defensive. Even if someone appears calm and chill, the ongoing stress could make one hard to focus and relax; and would eventually affect both mental and physical health in long run.

What do you think —Is Situationship a form of freedom, or is it in some ways, a kind of emotional self-torment?
👀💡

Situationship

⬅️⬅️

Many people believe the ultimate goal of love is marriage, but Gen Z doesn’t seem to see it that way anymore. Instead, they use the idea of a “Situationship” to describe a relationship between friendship and romance: no official status, no clear commitment, but it still comes with a sense of emotional closeness and ambiguity.

So why is this kind of relationship becoming more popular? From sociological perspective, there may be a few reasons:

1. Moving away from the traditional idea of relationships
In the past, relationships often followed a clear path: dating → cohabitation → engagement → marriage. But Gen Z tends to think 💬:“Let’s enjoy the moment first — no need to plan too far ahead!”

2. Separating “dating” from “finding a life partner”
Demographers points out that marriage has long been closely tied to forming a family. Situationship, however, separate “dating” from “finding a life partner”— love and connection can exist without necessarily leading to marriage right away.
So what do you think —
Are Gen Z choosing situationship because they understand love better and don’t want to be boxed in, or because they’re afraid of commitment?
👀💡
Let’s also look at this from another perspective — psychology: “Situationship” may have hidden negative effects. Want to know more? Check out our next post👉🏽: Is /Situationship/ more brutal than we think?

Panchi, a Japanese Macaque, was abandoned by his mother at birth. With no mother to care for him, he could only hold a stuffed toy as a substitute “mom”. Growing up without a mother made it difficult for him to fit in with other monkeys.

An Australian primate specialist says Japanese Macaques have a Maternal Hierarchy Social Structure. Without a mother to teach and support him, Panchi didn’t know how to interact with others properly. Sometimes, other macaques may seem to “discipline” him, but don’t worry—this is just normal way for them to communicate.

The good news is that, some macaques have recently helped groom Panchi, which is an important sign of building trust and friendship. When Panchi starts being accepted, it reminds us that relationships can build over time—and security can be developed later.
