HKUST’s pioneering Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) exemplifies the University’s well-established tradition for innovative teaching, learning, and research. Since establishment in 2008, formerly known as Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO), our dynamic academic divisions and units have provided unique education and research programs for students who are keen to make full use of the h

olistic learning and self-development opportunities that AIS provides. To tackle the challenging and multi-faceted issues of today’s world—be it climate change, optimizing the big data revolution, effective management of technology, or advancing sustainability—it is necessary to fuse knowledge and know-how from different fields to bring multiple perspectives to the task of changing the world for the better. Our goal is to provide a nurturing and interdisciplinary learning environment with strong industrial networks in which undergraduates and postgraduates can discover their true passion and interests through an education that connects them to the wider world. In addition to nurturing new interdisciplinary programs and research, AIS will serve as a special academic zone to drive outcome and impact of interdisciplinary studies to achieve institutional goals with flexibility and agility.

Driven by a passion for understanding cities, Prof. Wang develops AI-powered spatiotemporal intelligence systems that transform urban data into actionable insights. His research brings together AI and urban science to support smarter city management, improve everyday life for residents, and advance sustainable urban development. A warm welcome to our new cohort of AIS undergraduates and postgraduates! 🎉
We kicked off their journey here at the AIS Welcome Party on Aug 31, starting with inspiring words from 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗤𝗨 𝗛𝘂𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻, Dean of AIS. From discovering opportunities at AIS to taking on mass game challenges with peers, our freshmen stepped beyond their comfort zones and tackled challenges collaboratively. Through teamwork and connection, they began building friendships and experienced firsthand the interdisciplinary environment that defines AIS, where meaningful learning emerges beyond the boundaries of any single field of study.

Special highlights included the presentations of AIS Outstanding Community Service Award and the Outstanding Student Ambassador Awards.🏆

🔥 From a peak summer hazard to a "persistent warm-season threat"—Hong Kong is facing a rapidly escalating risk of severe heat stress. In a recent interview with the 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗝𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘆 𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗚, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Chair Professor in our Division of Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Mathematics, pointed out that this is “a risk projected to worsen”.

Citing his research team's study published in the journal Weather and Climate Extremes, Prof. Fung explained that the number of days per year repeatedly affected by heatwaves is projected to jump dramatically—from an annual average of 14 days in the 2010s to a staggering 101 days in the 2040s. 📊

As an SA, you will engage with prospective students through sharing sessions at your alma mater, participate in the AIS Peer Matching Program, and support a wide range of AIS activities and events, including HKUST Information Day, A Day at AIS, and AIS Fireside Chat and Mingling, etc.

You will also have the opportunity to showcase your life at AIS on our social media platforms by sharing your experiences with academics, exchanges, internships, admissions tips, HKDSE encouragement, and other aspects of student life. Students interested in creativity can also contribute to graphic design.

Along the way, you will develop leadership, communication, and public speaking skills, participate in training and team-building activities, and meet students from different programs and year levels.

🎉𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗭𝗵𝗲, Associate Professor in the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), has been awarded the RGC’s Overseas Research Fellowship Scheme 2026/27, recognizing his outstanding research achievements and commitment to tackling global environmental challenges. 🌍

Supported by the fellowship, Prof. Wang will undertake research visits to Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology, fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Prof. Wang’s research focuses on air quality and atmospheric chemistry, combining field measurements, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling to investigate pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). His work contributes to improved air quality forecast and pollution mitigation strategies.

🎉 Congratulations to 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗪𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝘂𝗸-𝗞𝘄𝗮𝗻, our MPhil student in Integrative Systems and Design (ISD), on being named a laureate of the Anita Conti Sustainable Innovation Fellowship 2026!

As one of only two recipients selected this year, David is recognized for his outstanding research potential and commitment to sustainability and environmental innovation. Under the supervision of Prof. Sai-Kit YEUNG, David’s research focuses on bridging the gap between AI and marine science, notably through developing specialized vision-language datasets like ORCA and MarineEval to enhance marine species recognition and ecological reasoning. 🪸🤖

Through this prestigious fellowship, David will spend three months in France conducting sustainability-related research and fostering international collaboration.

We look forward to seeing the impact of his work in marine AI, coral conservation, and sustainable innovation.🌊🪸

His research explores the platform economy, automation, AI, and the future of work, uncovering how emerging technologies shape society and how public policy can help ensure innovation benefits everyone. 💡

What a wonderful summer to merge engineering ingenuity with bold entrepreneurial vision! 🤖✨ Our T&M-DDP students wrapped up an unforgettable 10-day journey at the TEMG4970G Asia Business Plan Competition (ABPC) 2026, themed “Smart Robotics & AI Innovation.” Collaborating with students from HKUST(GZ), NUS, and NTHU, they worked together to create innovative startup ideas that combine robotics, AI, and entrepreneurship to solve real-world challenges.

From gaining firsthand exposure to Guangzhou’s dynamic tech ecosystem at VLAI, RoboSense, and XPeng, to presenting investor-ready pitches, our T&M-DDP students gained skills that go far beyond the classroom.

🏆 Congratulations to all participants for pushing the boundaries of innovation and building lasting global friendships!

Join us in celebrating this achievement and witnessing the team’s proud moment as their innovative project earns recognition!

Repost • HKUST Division of Integrative Systems & Design Congratulations to our ISD undergraduate student team, CHAN Kei Ching Evan, Shalini Kandasamy, Saanvi Ravi Katyayan, and Seojin Park Chloe, on being named the First Runner-Up in the VTech Innovation and Sustainability Award! 👏

The team was recognized for their Final Year Design Project, FireEye: Computer Vision and VLM-based Fire Safety Detection for Construction Sites, which leverages computer vision and vision-language models (VLMs) to enhance fire safety monitoring in construction environments and support proactive risk detection. 💡

Evan represented the team in presenting the project. The project was supervised by Dr. Jac Leung and Prof. Tristan Braud.

We also thank VTech for partnering with HKUST to support student innovation and promote sustainability through real-world applications.
