A recent study led by the Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), in collaboration with the Correctional Services Department, has demonstrated that mass screening of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among persons in custody (PICs) is a cost-effective strategy. By enabling early identification and treatment of infected PICs, this approach can offer measurable health benefits. The data provides strong evidence to support the implementation of systematic prison-based HCV screening in Hong Kong.
The study findings suggest that prison-based screening is particularly valuable in settings with moderate to high HCV prevalence and adequate healthcare resources, where structured programmes can yield substantial health improvements and economic advantages. Integrating correctional settings into national hepatitis prevention plans will be essential for accelerating the global goal of hepatitis elimination.
The project was jointly led by Dr Loey Mak Lung-yi, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, HKUMed and Professor Shirley Li Xue, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, HKUMed. Team members from the Department of Medicine included Professor Yuen Man-fung, Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor in Medicine, Chair Professor and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology; Professor Walter Seto Wai-kay, Simon KY Lee Professor in Gastroenterology and Clinical Professor; and Dr Dai Zonglin, post-doctoral fellow.
