🌟Mr LIU Yunpu, BEng(Hons) Mechanical Engineering with a secondary major in AIDA
Driven by his love for football, LIU Yunpu developed an exoskeleton to aid ligament 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻after surgery. The system’s flexible design mirrors human joint movement, offering customized recovery. Designing the structure was a major challenge, requiring advanced robotics and mathematics beyond typical undergraduate study. Yunpu sought guidance from mentors and peers, learning kinematic analysis and troubleshooting complex problems.
His persistence paid off when the project won the Champion title at the PolyU International Future Challenge. Along the way, he gained expertise in 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, and 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. Most importantly, Yunpu learned resilience and discipline, proving that determination and collaboration can transform personal passion into impactful innovation for rehabilitation.

Ma Tianyou, Xu Kan, and Zhang Jing Amber spearheaded the AI‑Empowered Digital Twin for 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, a three‑year journey that reimagined how buildings can save energy while keeping people comfortable. Tested across three sites, their system achieved 15–20% 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 without replacing equipment—proving that innovation can work with what already exists. Tianyou designed intuitive visualizations so operators could trust and engage with the system. Kan built standardized data formats and edge computing to break down barriers and ensure reliability. Amber optimized real‑time sensor integration, overcoming glitches to create a seamless experience.
Together, they tackled challenges of stable data flow and trustworthy AI with persistence and collaboration. With strong support from PolyU professors and departments, they transformed 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲. Their work demonstrates how AI can make building management smarter, sustainable, and truly impactful—bridging technology with real‑world change.

🌟Ms SZE Hiu Hei Corliss, PhD, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
Corliss Sze’s team investigated whether 𝗧𝗮𝗲𝗸𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼, enhanced with 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆, could foster social skills in children with 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿. Involving 77 children aged 6–11, the 10‑week program delivered significant improvements, with music boosting engagement. Motivated by martial arts backgrounds and a vision for inclusion, the team created a structured, supportive environment. Challenges in time management and coordination tested their resilience, but support from PolyU professors and facilities ensured success.
Corliss gained empathy, patience, and adaptive communication skills, learning to meet 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀. This project demonstrated how innovative, inclusive approaches can empower children, proving that research rooted in passion and collaboration can drive real‑world change.

A team of interdisciplinary PolyU students—George, Kent, Lucas, and Albert—successfully transformed a standard 𝗔𝗜𝗼𝗧 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 into an award-winning research project. Their study focused on optimizing image classification for low-power IoT devices, exploring techniques like 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 (SNN) and CNNs. By implementing transfer learning, the team overcame significant data limitations, boosting classification accuracy from a modest 60% to over 90%.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Mohammed Aquil Mirza, their findings were published and presented at the IEEE ICNSC conference, where they received the prestigious 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. This project highlights the potential of energy-efficient AI in real-world applications like robotics and smart sensing, demonstrating how student collaboration and faculty support can turn academic challenges into 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 industry contributions.
