📢 The Department of Education, Region 10 Has Introduced a Student Market Pass System
The Department of Education, Region 10 has introduced a Student Market Pass System as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce truancy and loitering in the Mackenzie and Wismar Markets while ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
Under this initiative, students are prohibited from loitering in the markets during school hours, as well as after dismissal and are expected to proceed directly home after school unless they have a legitimate reason to be elsewhere.
Where a student is required to be in the market during school hours and after school dismisses, a Market Pass must be obtained from the student's school. Passes may be issued for approved reasons including medical reasons, transportation arrangements, school business, emergencies, attendance at a parent or guardian's place of business, or other authorised activities.
Parents or guardians requiring a Market Pass for their child must submit a written request to the Headteacher stating the reason, date, and time for the student's presence in the market. Upon approval, the school will issue a Market Pass and maintain the necessary records for monitoring purposes.
The Department's Schools' Welfare Unit has partnered with the Guyana Police Force, the Linden Mayor and Town Council, schools, parents, vendors, and members of the public to support the effective implementation of this initiative.
The Market Pass System forms part of the Department's broader strategy to improve student attendance, strengthen discipline, enhance student safety, and create an environment that supports learning and academic success.
Together, we can ensure that our children remain focused on their education and are provided with the guidance and support necessary to achieve their full potential.

Strengthening Parent Involvement
Region 10, Guyana - Strong parental engagement during a child's formative years is one of the most effective strategies for improving educational outcomes, fostering positive behaviour, and building a lifelong love for learning.
Today, Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the Headteacher, Ms. Harmony Benn and staff of Wismar Hill Nursery School hosted a Parent Engagement Session aimed at strengthening the partnership between home and school. The activity forms part of the Department of Education, Region 10's ongoing efforts to foster meaningful parental involvement in the education of our learners from the earliest stages of their development.
Research consistently demonstrates that children achieve more when parents take an active interest in their education. By equipping parents with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to guide their children's learning, we can stem the tide of underachievement, improve school readiness, promote regular attendance, and cultivate positive attitudes towards education.
The Department of Education commends the administration, staff, and parents of Wismar Hill Nursery School for their commitment to creating a supportive learning environment where every child can thrive.
Together, we are building stronger families, stronger schools, and a brighter future for the children of Region 10.

📵 CELL PHONE USAGE IN SCHOOLS – A TIMELY REMINDER
Region 10, Guyana - With the increase in recorded incidents of violence in schools and the growing trend of fights being recorded and shared on social media platforms, the Ministry of Education Circular No. 7/2007, "Prohibition of Cell Phone Usage in Schools," serves as an important reminder of the standards and expectations that govern our learning institutions.
The circular prohibits the use of cell phones and similar electronic devices during classroom sessions, student assemblies, examinations, and marking exercises. The policy was established to protect instructional time, promote discipline, and maintain a safe and focused learning environment for all students.
The Department of Education, Region 10, wishes to remind students, parents, teachers, and members of the public that schools are places of learning. The unauthorized use of cell phones can contribute to distractions, indiscipline, cyberbullying, and the recording and dissemination of incidents that undermine the safety and well-being of students and staff.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to support schools by reinforcing these expectations at home and by ensuring that students understand the consequences associated with violating the policy.
Together, let us foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and positive behaviour in our schools.

Message to Parents and Guardians
Region 10, Guyana - Parents and guardians have a fundamental responsibility to ensure that their children are properly supervised and attend school regularly. Children should not be left unsupervised in markets, streets, recreational areas, or other public spaces during school hours or late into the evening.
Parents are urged to know their children's whereabouts at all times, reinforce the importance of education, and ensure that learners travel directly to and from school. By providing proper guidance, supervision, and support, parents play a critical role in preventing loitering, promoting safety, and helping children make positive life choices.
Together, we can create a safer environment and ensure that every child remains focused on learning and achieving success.
