Members of Lepto Alert hosted a panel discussion with guest speaker Ms. Metrina Daniels who is the acting manager attached to the critical care cardiac unit of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

A very informative and interactive session on a brief history of leptospirosis in Guyana as well as the signs and symptoms, treatment and preventative measures we can take to avoid contracting leptospirosis.

How can you get leptospirosis? How long does it take for the signs and symptoms of leptospirosis to appear after infection?, Is it possible for someone to show no signs or symptoms of leptospirosis?, How many phases does leptospirosis occur?

The signs and symptoms of leptospirosis usually appear suddenly, about 5 to 14 days after infection. However, the incubation period can range from 2 to 30 days, according to the CDC.

Most people recover from phase 1 or mild leptospirosis within a week without treatment, but around 10 percent go on to develop severe leptospirosis.

Signs and symptoms of phase 2 or severe leptospirosis will appear a few days after mild leptospirosis symptoms have disappeared.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects animals as well as humans.

It is spread when the urine of rodents and other animals like dogs or cattle contaminates bodies of water. When humans get into contact with this water either by drinking or by way of an open wound they too become infected.

Such occupations include veterinarians, farmers, sewer workers, fishermen and miners.
