QUEEN’S COLLEGE STUDENTS RECOGNIZED IN 2025 GUYANA PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AWARDS CEREMONY
Queen’s College students continue to excel in all aspects of academia, as they leave their mark at the 2025 Guyana Prize for Literature Awards Ceremony held on Friday, 7 August 2026, at the Pegasus Suites. Recognised among the noteworthy and talented Guyanese writers were Mortimer Duke and Juvelle Atherley, who expressed their creativity, imagination and ambition within their literary pieces.
Mentioned during the ceremony was the growing concern surrounding AI- generated work as the Chairman of the Jury for Fiction, Dr Stewart Brown, stated that the judges were quite disappointed in the discovery of large amounts of AI-generated content submitted and urged the Guyana Prize Committee to implement measures to address the problem in future competitions. Despite the concerns, the ceremony celebrated several literary achievements by established writers and emerging voices across poetry, fiction, non-fiction, short story and drama.
Queen’s College was well represented in the Youth Awards with Mortimer Duke and Ariel Mohanlall securing a joint first place in Youth poetry with “Notes Towards an Incomplete Definition,” and "Motion and Buckets" respectively, while Jessica Persaud placed third with "Oh Sea, swallow my Pleas." Finally, Juvelle Atherley took first place in short storys with “Saltwater Does Not Forget.” Their achievements are a source of pride for Queen’s College and serve as inspiration for fellow students to explore their literacy talents and creativity. Their success also proves that Queen’s College does not just produce accomplished scholars but is also nurturing gifted young writers.
