Remembering Janet Jagan on Her 17th Death Anniversary
Today, we pause to honour the life and legacy of Janet Jagan, a remarkable woman whose unwavering dedication to the people of Guyana helped shape the nation’s history.
As we mark the 17th anniversary of her passing, we reflect on her lifelong commitment to justice, equality, and national development. Born in the United States, Mrs. Jagan made Guyana her home and devoted her life to the struggle for independence alongside her husband, Cheddi Jagan. Together, they stood at the forefront of the country’s political transformation.
Janet Jagan’s contributions extended far beyond politics. She was a champion of workers’ rights, a defender of democracy, and a passionate advocate for the underprivileged. As Guyana’s first female President, she broke barriers and served with humility and strength, always guided by her deep love for the nation and its people.
Her legacy also lives on through her work in literature and education, particularly her efforts to inspire young minds through storytelling and cultural preservation.

Dr. Cheddi Jagan Photographic and Book Display at National Library
The Cheddi Jagan Research Centre unveil a photographic and book display in honour of the life and legacy of Dr. Cheddi Jagan at the National Library Georgetown and New Amsterdam Berbice
The exhibition open Monday, March 16, at 10:00 am and featured a collection of photographs and publications highlighting the life, struggles, and contributions of Dr. Jagan, former President of Guyana.
Dr. Jagan, widely regarded as the Father of the Nation, played a pivotal role in Guyana’s political development and in the struggle for democracy, social justice, and national independence. The display will provide the public, students, and researchers with an opportunity to reflect on his enduring legacy and contributions to the country.
The exhibition will also include books and publications authored by and about Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Mrs Janet Jagan offering insight into their political philosophy, vision for Guyana, and his lifelong commitment to the working people.
Members of the public, students, and interested organizations are invited to attend and view the display.
The Cheddi Jagan Research Centre remains committed to preserving and promoting the history and ideals of Dr. Cheddi Jagan for present and future generations.

Today, marks 29th death anniversary of Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
Dr. Jagan passed away on March 6, 1997, while serving as President of Guyana, bringing to a close a lifetime devoted to the struggle for freedom, democracy, and social justice. Born on March 22, 1918, at Port Mourant, he rose from humble beginnings to become a central figure in the political development of the nation.
In 1950, together with his wife Janet Jagan and other colleagues, Dr. Jagan co-founded the People’s Progressive Party, the country’s first mass-based political party. Throughout his life, he remained committed to improving the lives of workers, farmers, and the poor, advocating for equality, national unity, and independence.
After decades of political struggle and advocacy for free and fair elections, Dr. Jagan was elected President in 1992, marking the restoration of democracy in Guyana. His presidency focused on rebuilding the economy, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting development for all Guyanese.
On this solemn anniversary, the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre joins the people of Guyana in remembering the life, work, and enduring legacy of Dr. Jagan. His dedication to the principles of democracy, social justice, and national progress continues to inspire generations.
As we reflect on his life today, we honour his unwavering commitment to the people of Guyana and reaffirm the importance of preserving and promoting the ideals for which he struggled throughout his life.

As the first female President and one of the founding members of the People’s Progressive Party, Cde.Janet dedicated her life to the struggle for freedom, equality, and justice. Her courage, compassion, and commitment to the working people of Guyana continue to inspire generations.
