University of Guyana The Institute of Distance and Continuing Education was formerly known as the Department of Extra-mural Studies.

The Department of Extra-mural Studies was founded on 5 January 1976, which was later on upgraded to the Institute of Adult and Continuing Education (IACE), and in September 1996, it was renamed the Institute of Distance and Continuing education (IDCE). The Institute is primarily a centre for study and research in Adult Education and provides professional training for teachers of adults and persons
